Hey guys,

 

today we finished correcting the translation that we had started to review yesterday. Here is what you have finally said:

Then we continued the correction of the 2nd text (about Nora and Sally) with analysing the intricate relationships between the characters present and mentionned. Hey guys,

 

today we finished correcting your translation from the text about Ana. Here is what you finally agreed upon saying:

 

En utilisant l'argent liquide envoyé par Ana et ses frères et soeurs, sa famille construit une maison qui s'étend sur deux étages et éclipse les taudis en parpaing de ses voisins. La nouvelle maison est déjà pleine de canapés confortables, de chaînes hi-fi et de téléviseurs. Comme dans beaucoup de barrios mexicains, la consommation démesurée de sa famille a fait grandir un profond resentiment. Les gamins des familles les plus pauvres n'ont pas le droit d'entrer dans la maison de peur qu'ils n'aient l'idée de voler des jouets ou de la nourriture.

 

Then we moved classes to go to the documentation center and have the many mini conferences about hyper realism and we worked together with Mr Brot to finally comment upon a yet unknown work of art. today we first worked on the following video as a warm up:

 

 

 

 

Here are the notes we took about it:

 

India:
Who?

Dabbawala: a person who brings / transports food to customers at their schools or offices for example.
They are 5000 throng. They work for the group not just for themselves: there are the president, the supervisor and the Dabbawalas. They all have the same salary.
Where?

For lunch, they have had this service since 1890 in Mumbai.
What?

- Delivery service company, price of service: $10/month.
- Number of customers: 400 000 lunch boxes a day.
How/Why?

bicycle / train / man power. Now they have new technology; nowadays they have SMS - computers (Microsoft).
The salary of everyone can be reduced if they don't work well as everyone has shares in the firm.
 
EXPLANATION OF THE FAME
Prince Charles invited the president of this organisation to William's wedding; the BBC has made a documentary about them because their system works: they are very efficient. They are never late and never mistaken even if / even though they are illiterate. They are proud of their achievements.

 

Then we began to correct the translation you had to do for today about Ana's text. Here is what we have said so far:

Hi guys,

 

today we worked a little bit more on Ana's story and you had to determine whether it was a positive or a negative experience for her to have gone to the US.

 

Here is the chart that we drew about the two sides of her adventure and our conclusion:

 

 

In the story, there is a negative side / a seamy side:

 

  - indeed Ana feels uprooted. Even if she is the breadwinner of the family and it makes her happy, she is not with her children.

She fled Mexico because she and her family used to live below the poverty line. She went to the US in order to achieve her dreams and improve her family's life.

 

  - At the beginning, when she arrived, she was still destitute and cut off from society. It must have been difficult to adapt, above all because she was an unskilled worker. She may also have felt rejected.

 

VOCAB:

LONELINESS:

·         Although they were poor there were content, now the family is torn apart.

·         Ana  hasn’t seen her infant son since he was 1.

·         Angel (daughter) has no friends -> the neighbours are jealous and they fear they might steal from the family.

·         Ana can’t live with her family.

·         Ana’s children don’t consider her as their mother but only the breadwinner who sends gifts.

·         Ana's mother suffers without her children.


ALIENATION:

·         Ana has been sucked into consumerism.

·         Ana's mother thinks she has forgotten where she used to live / where comes from.

THE LIFE OF AN ILLEGAL ALIEN:

·         Ana is an outlaw

SUCCESS:

·         Better life.

 ALTRUISM:

·         She helps her family to have what they want.

·         Expensive house (in Mexico)

·         Ana and her siblings helped build the house

·         Ana's family has lots of money consdering Mexican standards.

INTEGRATION/ASSIMILATION:

·         American friends.

·         Cristina offered a job which allowed her to have an apartment.

·         She admits she as a new taste of the “good life”.

·         Ana has been sucked into consumerism.

 

 

All the parts of the bright side of her adventure hide a seamy side. It’s two sides of the same coin. But there are 2 points of view. Ana’s point of view: she is satisfied / content with her new life and well-integrated.
Her family’s POV (her mother's): they wish the family could be united again.

 


 

HW:

- d'ici à jeudi: aller voir l'exposition au CDI et trouver des questions à poser (au moins 5) concernant les oeuvres exposées. Vous devez vous montrer curieux et préparer votre conférence sur le thème.

Hey guys,

 

today you spoke a LOOOT about Ana's situation in the US. Here is the global written account of what you have said so far:

 

Ana used to be poor in Mexico but now she is well-off in the US. She must have been depressed and lonely at first when she left her family six years ago. Ana must have been torn apart to leave her infant son.

However she has succeeded in integrating to her new life even if she does everything off the books: she is an illegal immigrant who takes a lot of risks. She started as a laundry woman. She then became a maid and now she has a more important but risky job; she is a broker for undocumented migrants. She helps them to find a job (she is like a coyote but for work).

We can say that she has climbed up the social ladder. She sends things to her chilren who stayed in Mexico so that they have an easier life.

If they came to the US with the salary / wages / income she earns, they couldn't have the same standard of living in America. Moreover it costs a lot of money to pay for the smuggler and it would be really hard for her family and children to all cross the border illegally. Besides, the more they are in the US, the more they are at risk to be caught by the police.

Because she is determined and courageous, she has fought her homesickness and guilt and she has found friends to support her.

today after having an interesting presentation by Sarah of yesterday's picture (good job), we moved on with the lesson and began studying a text about an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

 

Here is what we have said about her so far:

 

Ana: an illegal / undocumented immigrant from Mexico.


She left her 2 children and ex-husband to go to America. She paid a smuggler / coyote to help her and drove to Los Angeles where she finally took the plane / boarded an airplane to go to NYC.
During her trip, she hid in a car; she crawled into the US through a drainpipe / the sewage system. t must have been a very exhausting trip / journey. It must have been a very dangerous trip. She could have died in the desert for instance.

today we first talked about this extract from the movie Philadelphia as a warm up:

 

 

 

 

Here is what we said about it:

 

 

Warm up : Philadelphia

The document is an extract from the movie Philadelphia. It features two men, a white man (Andrew) and a black man (a lawyer). It takes place at the lawyer's office. Andrew has come because he wants to sue his employers for firing / dismissing / sacking him wrongfully.
He thinks they have fired him because he has AIDS. When Andrew says those words, the lawyer is terrified. He's more than ill-at-ease. He looks at everything he touches and he stares at him suspiciously and anxiously. He's afraid of being contaminated with HIV / of being sick too.

today we first watched the live report about the attacks on the WTC back in 2001 and you had to confront the text we were studying with the testimony of the two eye witnesses upon that day.

Here are some of the comments you made about the document:

 

 

WTC attacks:
 
This document is a report of the events that happened on 9/11/2001. There is a journalist asking questions to two eye witnesses. The 1st woman says that she was returning home from school with her daughter when she heard a loud noise. She mimics the sound of an airplane. Then she saw a fireball and an enormous fire. There was also a huge smoke. She also describes the events happening live. She can see a plume of confetti fallling down from the tower. The 2nd eye witness is more shocked as she understands that this is not an accident. She can see, hear, and feel the shock waves of the explosion.

 

 

 

 


 

 

Then we continued working on the correction of the translation:

today we began to correct the translation you had to complete during your 3-hour test before the holidays. Here goes what we have done so far:

 

In the days afterward, I couldn't get in to them. The area had been cordoned off and most it evacuated but somehow the police nerver arrived at 40 white street to tell its residents to leave.
Les jours suivants, je n'ai pas réussi à les rejoindre. Le quartier avait été bouclé et la plupart évacuée, mais bizarrement la police n'arriva jamais au 40 white street afin de dire à ses habitants de quitter les lieux.

Warm Up: Immigration Waiver

Today we did a warm up about immigration services in the USA. Firstly we began with a little activity, we watched a video that made us feel as if we were on a plane; we were the passengers and Mr Hattais was the flight attendant (he made a very good job!). Then we filled in a waiver and to finish we talked about it. We gave our opinion and wrote the lesson.

 

Lesson:

I don’t think it’s really useful because people can lie. I believe it cannot prevent terrorists from striking. It’s only to enforce security measures and show that the government cares about people. It’s to reassure them.

today I hope you had fun performing your scenes from the text "The Heart of Darkness". You all did a pretty good job as it was rather difficult but you did prepare your staging and acting quite well! Congratulations!

 

Let's keep it up and try to have volunteers who will adapt some texts that we have studied or will study throughout the year.

 

 

During the 2nd part of the hour, we continued working with the correction for your test about Niska and her nephew Xavier coming back from the war. You had to work in groups and you will get bonus points for you future exam according to the quality of your correction.
