Hi guys,
today you first worked in groups to achieve the best possible answers for your analytical questions about the comic book "Maus" by Art Spielgelman.
Here the notes that you took from the different presentations:
(wirtten by Déborah) - Why was important for the artist to write this story?
It's important for Artie to tell this story because :
- He needs to commemorate his father's memory. It's a tribute to him.
- He may want to alleviate the pain of his father and share a last useful and loving moment with him before his death.
- Moreover, it's important for him to know his own story (i.e. the story of his family) and to testify about it.
- He takes part in denouncing the horrible reality of the Jewish conditions of living during the second World War but it is also a way of showing the Nazi
system.
- Finally, writing this book for him is as if he kept a souvenir of his father before his death and his memory alive. It's a token of
love.
(written by Maude) - What about the animals to represent people in the story?
English people would be cows because they are said to eat a lot of beef and because of the famous mad cow disease.
Americans would be dogs because they are thought to eat lots of hot dogs.
And French people would be frogs or skunks like "Pepé le pew" because one stereotype about the French is that they smell bad.
Another possbile couple prey --- predator which could have been used by the artist to represent the Jews and the Nazis would have been the wolf and the
sheep or lamb or the lion and the antilope although the latter couple is less rooted into children popular culture.
(written by Mailys) - Why did the author chose to represent people as animals ?
The author chose to represent people as animals because he wanted to insist on
the hunt of the Jews by the Nazis (the Jews are depicted as mice and the Nazis as cats). Moreover, he may have wanted to dehumanize people because of the horror of the
Holocaust.
