Hi guys,

today we first did an oral competition to know who could remember and use as many words as possible in sentences to speak about India. Then you refused to do your presentations (positive and negative things about the country... shame on you... ... ... there will be consequences...).

Finally you presented the main elements in the text that we have started to study:

"to be written by..."

HW:

Hey guys,

as I'm really not satisfied with what lots of you have done for the AIDS poster, I will give you another chance to improve your grade over the holidays... Here are the results of let's call it "first draft"...:

Entire Network

Let's hope you do something nicer this time. Let me remind you that your posters are going to be exhibited and that it would be better for you not to be ashamed of what you have done, wouldn't it...?

HW:

Hi guys,

today we continued working on India and we first watched a document about a strange wedding.

You can watch it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

Vocabulary :

                  a guest - a person attending a ceremony
                  Bridegroom --> Husband
                  Bride --> wife
                  Bridesmaid / best man
                  Holy / Sacred animal

Warm up:

The wedding ceremony of the sacred / holy cows.
WHO: It features a woman who wants to marry two cows.
WHERE: The scene takes place in a small village in India.
WHEN: It took two months to organize the ceremony.
WHAT: It deals with the wedding of two cows
It is an unusual / a strange thing even in India where the animals are holy
How/Why: The woman decided to marry her cow; the animal is like a daughter for her since she can't have children
Cost: It cost a lot of money = expensive -> even if it cost only $3 or 4 / pers., you have to remember that 35% of the population in India live with less than $1 / day!

Then we continued the class with the analysis of the two sets of texts you had to read. Here are the pieces of information you have taken from the documents:

"to be written by Esther"

Additional Vocabulary:

"to be written by Esther"

HW:

- vous devez préparer un compte rendu complet sur les points positifs et négatifs du pays et donner votre opinion en fin de présentation: "would you like to visit India now, or not?"

Hi guys,

today Robin first did his presentation of the country highlighting both the positive and negative aspects in the country. Here are the notes that you took:

On the one hand...:

+:- Rich, dense environment =  Fauna and flora / Natural resources
    - An idea of a very rich culture (art, cinema, religion, food, ...) : love dance, songs, magicians, flashy color, Bollywood, many religions and languages, spicy food...
    - Rapid economic development -> life expectancy has risen rapidly, better health, sanitation, and literacy.
   - = a developing country

But on the other hand...:

-: - Poverty VS Wealth (over population / Sanitation pb/ access to water/ endangered species = cf. Bengali tiger)
   - Slums / Shanty towns
   - India is densely populated:1,15 billion --> 60%:  urban areas (problem to find a job ?)

    - Difficult living conditions : - 35% live with less than $1 a day
                                                      - Malnourishment

Vocabulary & pronunciation: Heaven, 'hinduism, 'buddhism, dance, behave = to have an attitude, capital city,  Finally

Then we continued the lesson with the study of p. 51 from your books for those who had their books and for those who didn't, I gave them a set of 2 documents to analyse in pairs.

HW:

APPORTEZ VOTRE LIVRE!!!!!

Hi guys,

today after speaking about the dabbawala service in Mumbai, India, we continued the class correcting the vocabulary exercises and cultural facts you had to complete for last time.

Here is what we said about the report:

Warm up:

The box is a container for food, it's made of metal and it has a wooden handle.

The dabbawalas transport these boxes to their clients / customers. They bring their lunch to their schools or offices --> they sell a service but not the food.
The food is prepared / cooked by the owner of the box.

Vocabulary:

to deliver / to bring / to transport /

Wood / wooden /

handle

tin / metal

customers / clients

Here are the elements of correction and vocabulary from the worksheet:

1) despite: malgré  / Gap: différence - fossé / Rise (rose-risen): augmenter

2) malnourishment: malnutrition / overall: globalement / Impoverment: appauvrissement / life expectancy: espérance de vie

3) illiterate / illiteracy

4) Numbers:

35%: percentage of people who live on less than $1 a day.
60%: people in towns.
20%: people in rural areas who don't have access to proper sanitation and water.
63 yo: Life expectancy
61%: adult literacy increase over a short period in time.

6) Positive things about India:

- social aspects : infant mortality has decreased and life expetancy has risen. Adult literacy has risen too.

- economic aspects: poverty has declined. There has been a rapid economic development.

Watch the video again here:

HW:

Hi guys,

today you worked and spoke about the most striking events of the year 2011 thanks to some pictures that Holly had brought you. Once again there was a competition in your groups and some won while others shamefully lost.

I think that their names were quite fateful...: the Brahmins and Nirvana won while the outcastes lost...

HW:

- ne pas oublier d'apporter son livre...

Hey guys,

today we first warmed up with your possible future studies and I learnt that some of you wanted to go abroad while others were scared or not interested.

Then we continued the class with the correction of the last part of your test about emotions and symbols. Here is what we said about those two topics:

EVOLUTION OF THE CHARACTERS' EMOTIONS

ANDREW:
at the beginning =  enthusiastic / confident / relaxed

When he arrives, Charles says everyone in the room is his friend.

then = scared / distressed / shocked / surprised --- Andrew gets fired

Then = embarrassed / revolted ------ Charles gets more serious and he does not understand why he is fired. He is interested in understanding / knowing the reasons why he is dismissed.

Finally = angry / furious ---- Andrew realizes he is fired because he has AIDS and not because he is incompetent.

HIS BOSS & PARTNERS

Charles: cold, pitiless, serious

Woman: doesn't want to feel responsible -> she looks embarrassed; she has a grin on her lips. The woman looks embarrassed she doesn't want to feel responsible. She looks away and has a nervous grin on her lips.

Bob: angry / enraged / he has a burst of rage/anger.

At first: polite / apparently friendly / but actually sarcastic = they intend to make Andrew feel pain.

HW:

Hi guys,

today we first reviewed how to present any kind of documents. Here is what we said for the presentation of the extract:

"to be written by..."

Then we continued with a deeper analysis of the action taking place in the document and about what really happened as well as the reasons explaining the attitudes of the characters. Here is what we said:

"to be written by..."

HW:

Hi guys,

today we worked on your movie titles, story lines and posters and you had to make a presentation in front of the class to defend what you thought was the best movie.

Here are some of your ideas:

It makes me want to see the movie.

It sums up the story very well.

I can relate to this story.

It's quite original, interesting and very realistic.

It complements and completes the title.

I absolutely love it.

I like it when there is a twist in the story.

HW:

PS: I'll ask Holly to post the acutal posters online as soon as we have finished this activity.

Hi guys,

today we watched the 2nd part of the interview of Andrew Beckett with his lawyer and here is what we said about it:

The lawyer says that he can't help Andrew with his case. He can't see a case.

However, Andew thinks he has an ulterior motive = personal reasons.
He could refuse to help him because...:

- ...he thinks Andrew is untrustworthy; he is a liar.

- ...he thinks he doesn't have money to pay.

- ...Andrew is gay and he may he homophobic.

- ...he doesn't want to have a "bad" reputation. If he sues a big law firm, he could lose. What's more, the idea of defending person who is sick with AIDS is not positive for his image.

When joe Miller says he doesn't want to help him, Andrew looks both sad / disappointed, and angry.

Additional vocabulary:
- an anti-acid
- (to) be relieved

You can watch the scene here again:

HW:

http://www.theliberaloc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/red_ribbon-world_aids_day.jpgHi guys,

today we first did a quick recap of what you were supposed to know about the text Philadelphia.

Here is what we said (using the vocabulary of "job", "illness", and "body parts"):

Job:
Andrew's lover / partner teaches in an institute.
Andrew has been fired from a law firm because the boss said he's incompetent.
Andrew arrives at Joe Miller's office to say that he has been discriminated against.

Body:
Andrew shakes Joe's hand.
Andrew has caught a skin cancer: we can see lesions on his skin (on his face and particularly on his forehead).

Illness:
Andrew has AIDS; some of the symptoms of this disease are illnesses such as pneumonia or skin cancer. He has done chemo and that's why he doesn't have hair anymore.

Then we continued the lesson with the correction for your reading comprehension test that was catastrophic before the holidays... Here are important assignments that you need to get familiar with:

"to be written by ..."

And the correction for the quesions will come later and be finished on Friday.

HW:

Hi guys,

  http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sngESMftL._SX500_.jpg

today we worked on the text at the origin of the movie we had watched before the holidays, Philadelphia.

Here is what we said about it:

The scene takes place at Joe Miller's office (a lawyer who is an old acquaintance of Andrew's). Andrew has come to sue his ex-boss from a big law firm because he says he was wrongfully fired. Joe is skeptical and not interested. He wants Andrew to go out because he is both scared to sue this powerful company and to be contaminated with AIDS.

In this extract, we learn that:
* Andrew has a partner /lover = he is gay
* he is also a lawyer
* "KS" - he has a cancer

Here is the vocab ulary from the text refering to:

1- job

incompetence / dismissed / firm / office / fired

2- illness

cancer / symptoms / ks / aids / pneumonia / medication / diagnosed / lesions

3- law

lawyer / (to) sue / law suit / law firm

4- body

face / lesion / forearm / forehead / leg / skin

HW:

Hi guys,

today was our last day of class before the holidays... awesome, ain't it?

We worked on a scene from the movie Philadelphia, first without the sound and you had to focus only on staging and acting to invent a possible dialogue. You did quite a good job assuming what the situation was.

You can watch the extract again below:

Here is what we said after watching the scene with sound:

Presentation:

The document is a scene from the movie "Philadelphia".
There are two characters: a black man (lawyer) and a white man (Mr Beckett).

Situation:

Mr Beckett is at the lawyer's office because he has been fired and he wants to sue his ex-boss. His company says that he has not been serious but he thinks there is an ulterior motive; he
believes he's been fired because he has AIDS.

The characters feelings and details:

- The Lawyer

            * at first:

-> happy, enthusiastic to see an old acquaintance.

            * when he learns Mr Beckett has AIDS:

      -> scared and embarrassed
-> he thinks he can be infected / contaminated so he walks away from him and looks at
everything he touches.

Emotions/attitudes:

- in a hurry
- suspicious
- He thinks Mr Beckett is untrustworthy

HW:
