http://www.newsinus.us/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Yellowstone-National-Park-Program.jpgHey guys,

after taking a quiz about irregular verbs, you had to recap the lesson about "the car in the gilded cage" and Rémi did quite a good job talking about it.

Then we continued the lesson with listening to a document about Mark and his friend talking about his holidays in the USA.

You can listen to it again here:

Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by Antoine"

HW:

Hey guys,

today we started a new sequences entitled "Dreams". We began to study an opening document for this topic.

http://idata.over-blog.com/3/18/86/31/2nde/Dreams-and-the-gold-rush/pipedreams-rolls-royce.jpg

Here is what you have said about it so far:

What type:

This document is probably a poster for a lottery to win a car or an ad to promote an art exhibition.
What is certain is that it's a drawing with a luxurious car in the center.
We can't decide on the type of document for sure because there is no text, no caption, i.e. no information.
The document can be divided into 3 parts: the title at the top, a series of words on the right and the picture on the left.

Who?

It features 3 people: a couple on the right and a lone person on the left.
The couple may be two bankers who want to take the car away from the man because he is now poor.
He can't afford this car anymore; or they may be lawyers who will help him to get his car back.

How? He may be thinking: "I wish I could get my car back", "I wish I had money",... He is disappointed because his dream cannot come true.
It's a pipedream, i.e an impossible dream.
                                     unrealistic

Symbol: The door in the gilded cage is difficult to see and therefore to open, i.e it's difficult to make his dream come true.

Voc:

a gilded cage => a cage made of gold.

hope

disappointment => to be disappointed

a wish come true

HW:

Hi guys,

today we tried to finish everything we had to say about the topic "Immigration to the US" even if we haven't had time yet. However, we managed to say lots of things and give important definitions:

E Pluribus Unum : it's the motto of the Usa. It means "out of many, one". It's the symbol of the melting pot. You can read it on coins, bank notes and official documents.

Out of many cultures,            one culture
                       languages,                nation

                      people,                      people

                       communities,           community
                       nations,
religion
                       countries,
                country

Ellis Island : It's situated in the bay of N.Y.C where immigrants arrived before entering the country. They had to take 2 tests: a medical examination and a literacy test.
If they passed the test, they could enter in the USA.
If they failed they had to go back to their country of origin.

Pogrom : a massacre, a persecution of a religious group. There were many pogroms in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century against the Jews.

Final decision of the doctor:

When Carl Travers said that he passed the test,
Jacob was quite happy
                    amazed
                    quite surprised
                    flabbergasted (shocked & surprised)

He said: Do you mean I've passed the test? -> He is not sure he understood correctly. He is both scared and enthusiastic.
Jacob is so excited that he makes a lot of mistakes in English.
                     thrilled
                     enthralled

HW:

Hi guys,

today we first spoke about animal noises and their onomatopoeia. Here is what we said:

"to be written by Ameline"

Then we continued the class with the most probable explanations for the doctors' behaviour and I gave you my personal interpretation:

The most probable assumptions :

1st Doc
     - He may be fed up with his job.
2nd Doc
      - He may be nice with Jacob because doctors have to be kind with their patients.
      - He may understand how it is to be like Jacob (troubled and complicated past) and he may have grown up in a nice family.

Mr Hattais's assumptions :
1st Doc - He may be tired of the repetitive job he is doing. Checking 5,000 immigrants everyday is not very interesting.
2nd Doc - His parents or grand-parents may have been immigrants too, who arrived during the first wave of immigration between 1840-1860

Finally, we ended the class understanding the text and what the lexical fields of both fear and pain meant for Jacob. Here is what we wrote:

FEAR
- "Oh god" --> (he is afraid of going back Russia)
- (to) blurt out --> (say quickly)
- "but nothing wrong with my leg"  --> (he lies because he's scared of going back to Russia and he's frightened of the Cossacks)
- (to) sweat
- Nervously
- "How can I be calm" --> (He can't calm down = he is distressed)
- "They (will) kill me"
PAIN
- "Hunting accident" --> (He lies, it's not the truth)
- limp slightly
- bullet wound
- "I got shot"
- "He was wreck" --> (He is both in pain physically and mentally)
- agony / apprehension --> (He is agonizing. He is in pain = it's tantalizing, not because of his body here. He suffers mentally)
- ached a bit

HW:

Hey guys,

today you behaved like slugs and it was very hard for me to have you speak... watch out for a potential pop quiz in the future if you ever reiterate this lack of enthusiasm...

However, we managed to talk about the possible reasons why the two doctors acted differently and you began to work on the lexical fields about "pain and fear". Here is what you have said so far:

1st doctor :
- Maybe, he grew up in a strict family.
-            He's seen many immigrants and he's tired.
-            He's old and he's had enough. He is fed up with his job.
-            He is angry with his boss.
-            He is racist.
-            He has a complicated past.
2nd doctor :
- He grew up in a nice family.
- His father was a Nazi and he doesn't want to be like him.
- We can assume that he's just had a promotion, that's why he's kind.
- He loves his job.
- He fell in love with another immigrant.
- Possibly his parents educated him very well.
- He may try to help Jacob because he is also a Russian Jew and he's escaped a pogrom like Jacob.
- Maybe like him he has a troubled past. He knows how it is to be like Jacob.
- Doctors have to be tolerant/nice with their patients.
- He is Jewish too.

HW:

Hey guys,

today you had to report your findings about the text and especially the two doctors. Here is what we said about them (1st part and 2nd part):

1st part : The inspector

We don't know his name. We just understand his role. He asks questions to see if Jacob knows how to count and how to speak English.
He wants to check if he is healthy, that's why he is interested in his leg. He is suspicious; consequently he sends him to another doctor.
He's very serious and strict. He is not understanding and rather aggressive : that's why Jacob is scared and intimidated.

2nd part : The doctor

Contrary to the inspector, Carl Travers is much kinder/ sweeter/ nicer. He's more relaxed and understanding.
He is humane. He is interested in understanding why Jacob is sweating, why he is afraid. He wants to know his story.

---------------------------------------
Voc :  (to) know how to + BV

--> compétences, savoir-faire

Ex :  I know how to ...

- ... write
- ... read
- ... send a text message w/o looking
- ... ride a bike

HW:

Hi guys,

today we first warmed up with whether you had already been abroad or not. Here is what we said:

Warm up: Have you ever been to a foreign country / abroad / outside of France.

+ Yes, I have visited many foreign countries. I've been to Italy, Mexico, Belgium,...
I went to Poland two years ago to visit my family.

- No, I've never been abroad. I stay in France during my holidays and I go to "Charente maritime" because my father loves it.

Then we continued talking about the text and studying it in more details. We especially focused on time elements to determine when the scene could take place. Here is what we said about it:

We can assume that the scene takes place... / The scene may take place... a long time after the pogrom because Jacob's wound is healed: he doesn't limp a lot anymore. He says that the long pogrom isn't over yet; if he goes back to Russia he will get killed.

Voc :

slightly = not a lot

  [ai]
-> He doesn't limp a lot anymore = he limps slightly

a wound
     [u:]

to heal = to be in  good health again
     [i:]                                 [e]
a Cossack = a Russian soldier

a bullet

HW:

http://photoshoptutorials.ws/images/stories/DriedBloodSplattersPhotoshopBrushes_F902/image_6.pngHi guys,

today you first took a vocabulary test. I hope you did alright. I'll give you your results asap.

Then we continued the lesson with a quick recap of what you had said earlier and we moved on thinking about Jacob's future. What will he do in the future?

Here are the hypotheses that you wrote down in your copybooks:

Exprimer une hypothèse:
Will -->100%    (= future)
May --> 50%
Might --> 20%
- He may try and find friends or family in Russia before leaving.
- He may get revenge because he is angry.
- He may try to kill the soldiers whom he considers as killers.
- He may be hunted by the soldiers.
- He may be hide in the forest / in another village.
- He might leave Russia and go to another country.
- He might die of starvation.
- His injury may get infected.
- He may be capured.
- He may come back to his village to bury his family.

We insisted on how to construct an hypothesis in English and saw the differences between 3 modal auxiliaries (will / may / might).

Finally, we read the very first lines of the text I gave you and you discovered that Jacob had in fact immigrated to the US... We'll learn more about him next time.

HW:

- apprendre la leçon.

Hi guys,

as some of you were absent since there was a special Portuguese class, we will do the vocabulary test on Wednesday.

So we talked more about the story of Jacob in the video. Here is what we said about it:

The main character (actions)

- He sees / saw them arrive.
- He sees / saw his companions being killed.
- He warns / warned his father that the soldiers are coming.
- His father is / was killed by a soldier in front of him.
- He screams / screamed.
- He tries / tried to escape.
- he is / was shot by a soldier in the right leg.
- He falls / fell down, gets up / got up and limps / limped.
- He frightens / frightened a horse with a torch.

- He kills / killed  a soldier.
- He flees / fled his village on a horse.

Present / preterit

Then we continued with reviewing how to build the preterit in English (regular and irregular verbs) + how to pronounce the /ED/ ending.

Hi guys,

we first studied how the American population was distributed in the US according to "race and ethnicity" but also density thanks to the following powerpoint presentation:

vignette-census.JPG(opens with open office)

Here is what we said about it:

The two fastest growing ethnic groups are the Asians and Latinos who have nearly doubled in 10 years (from 2000 to 2010). It's a big increase.
Exprimer une hypothèse au passé :
S + Aux modal + have + p.passé
(may have / might have)
Ex:
     - Adolf Hitler's soldiers may have burnt the synagogue.
     - There may have been a lighthing storm.
It might have struck the buildings.
     - Someone from another religion might have burnt it: it may have been an arson.

Then we continued the class with this picture which served as an anticipation to the extract from the movie Ellis Island we watched later:

Here is what we said:

The scene takes place in Russia in 1907, more precisely in a Jewish village. It features villagers (families with their children) and Russian soldiers who are arriving. There are also a rabbi and the main character. The main character and the rabbi may be related (father and son).

It's an attack, it's a "pogrom": a massacre, the persecution of a religious group. There were many progoms in Russia at the beginning at the 20th century against the Jews.

You can have a look at the video down here again. We will make further comments about it next time:

Here is what we said so far:

"to be written by Ameline"

HW:
