Hey,

today we finished talking about the text from the A-Levels in the US. You had to create a questionnaire for this text and we noticed that your questions were relevant and actually present in the test itself. Good Job!

I hope that this job will have helped you understand better what you are expected to do for the exam.

Until then, you know that I will try to make myself available if you need me on the Internet.

Good luck!

Mr Hattais.

PS: I want to have a photo of Sonia, Aline, and Julien drinking from their "English Day by Day" branded mug! I need to promote the website :) ... Just kidding even if I would definitely LOVE to get this picture... ... ...

PPS: just in case you need your list of texts for the oral exam, it will be available on Friday at the highschool to make a photocopy. But remember, DO NOT take English unless you have a VERY VERY bad grade and DO call me before so that I can give you some pieces of advice.

Hey,

today we first corrected some grammar exercises on which you had problems. I hope you will have understood how things work better.

Then in the last part of the hour, I gave you a photocopy of the A-Levels from the USA that took place recently.

For tomorrow, you need to read the text completely and to prepare questions according to your question word (Who / Where / How). The one who will ask the most important number of relevant questions will be given a reward!

See you then,

Mr Hattais.

Hi,

today we first corrected today's assignment, i.e. how to express positive comments (apart from it's good...). Hope this will help you to improve your future essays.

Then we continued working on the correction of your last mock exam and we particularly focused our attention on some translation techniques. Here they are:

"to be written by..."

Oops... I forgot to bring Sonia's gift today... sorry but she didn't even remember to ask me for it... argh... what a goldfish I am...!

HW: for next time, I gave you a list of grammar exercises to try and eliminate the regular mistakes from your written expression. You need to complete the exercises in which you often make mistakes. Go and check the grammar rule before on the web and then complete the exercises. It will help you proofread your essays and narratives.

Hi,

today we first finished speaking about the black tide that happened on the shores of Louisiana last year saying who was responsible and on what grounds they were accused. Here is what we said:

"to be written by..."

Then we continued the class with the results of the survey concerning your poems. And the winner is...

Sonia!

Congratulations!

Even if your poem didn't respect the rules as much as it should have, people were rather moved when reading it. Good job! The other poems were also pretty good. You'll have your gift tomorrow.

HW: you need to finish the activity we started in class, i.e. read the comments from the internet users and highlight positive comments on how to express likes (equivalent words or phrases for "good" or "interesting" for example). Please, make sure you also correct the mistakes from the comments where there are some.

http://i47.tinypic.com/1tvpja.jpgHey,

today we worked about the last topic of the year: the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that happened last year.

We first worked with a subverted logo of the company and we commented on it. Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by ..."

Then we studied a new document, an article from the internet. Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by ..."

HW: for next time, prepare a recap of the documents and get ready to talk about reproaches and accusations from this document.

Files: download a copy of the article here (yet to be uploaded)

Hey,

today was the last writing test that you would take this year. I hope that you will have achieve good results despite the fact that some of you seemed not to know that the test was going to take place today...

Here reads the subject:

"Can you imagine a killing spree in France as it happened in America? If it happened at your school, what would be your reaction?" Develop your essay in an introduction, development, and conclusion. (250-300 words)

today we finished making the recap of the text thanks to the worksheet I gave you yesterday.

Here are the answers we gave:

"to be written by ..."

Additional vocabulary:

"to be written by ..."

HW: you need to prepare a commentary of this text for your possible oral exams (squelette de plan + rédaction intégrale incluant Introduction / Développement / Conclusion en prenant comme modèle le 1er commentaire de l'année; n'oubliez pas d'y insérer des références culturelles et d'y injecter du vocabulaire et des structures grammaticales vues dans la séquence et dans l'année pour augmenter la qualité de votre présentation).

Get ready for a writing test (essay) on Wednesday about the topic of guns. So learn your lessons and your vocabulary.

http://www.cartoonstock.com/lowres/dbo0036l.jpgHey,

today we analysed the pictures illustrating our text once more but in more details and we began to study the essay, paying attention when reading to the capitalized words. We divided the text into 2 parts and we tried to give a title to each part.We also analysed the content of the first 3 paragraphs (wh- questions about the two major events referred to in the document).

Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by ..."

HW: for next time, learn your lesson and new vocabulary and get ready to speak about the content of the text.

Hey,

today we first watched a new video awareness campaign about junk food. You can watch it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

The document is an ad campaign against fast food restaurants and in particular Mc Donald's (the Golden Arches).
It aims at denouncing the bad quality of junk food and it intends to warn people about the consequences for our health -> high cholesterol / high blood pressure / heart attack.
The video features a man lying dead at the morgue with his wife / widow crying. He is holding the murder weapon in his hand: a left-over of a hamburger.

The slogan reads: McDonald's, I was loving it instead of "I'm loving it" to show that it can be the cause of our death.
It also states: "Tonight, make it vegetarian" to warn us that meat can be dangerous for health. It recommends us to have a healthy diet.

Additional vocabulary:
(to) be moved
chest
scar
a commercial = an ad on TV
(to) commit suicide
(to) poison

Then we continued working on the notion of American gun culture and here is what we said:

The values conveyed by guns in the American culture:

They are symbols for...:

- independence -> the American revolution made the US a free state. The British government didn't have power over them.
- democracy -> the United States was not under the control of the British Crown anymore.
- survival -> During the conquest of the West, people used to hunt buffalos to feed.
- protection -> They used guns to "protect" themselves against the "enemies" and exterminated the Native Americans where were a threat for them.
- freedom -> The Civil War marked the end of slavery and the slaves were freed thanks to this war.
- unity -> It also unified the country (North and South).

That's why guns are deeply-rooted into the culture and that now the N.R.A is a very influent and powerful political lobby.

HW: for tomorrow, you need to focus your work on speaking about the two pictures illustrating our new text and to compare them.

http://www.corrupt.org/drupal/files/images/gun.jpgHey,

today we first began the class by partially correcting your homework from today (analysis of the picture entitled "Father and Child).

Here is what we said about it:

Type of doc / color -> the document is a photograph in black and white whose artist is unknown.
The source and the date of publication are not mentioned either but it could have been published in a magazine in the 80's or even nowadays.
It deals with the arms trade in the USA and in the world. It aims at everyone and the photographer intends to...

- ... make us aware of the importance of the arms tade in the world
- ... denounce the fact that...

Then we continued working on the theme of gun culture with some important quotations by famous American people. Here is what we said:

- it's a matter of education. Guns have always been present in the USA since the creation of the country. The 2nd amendment to the constitution states / reads that it's a right to possess / own a weapon for protection.

It is deeply-rooted in the American culture.

Some of most important historical events in the USA include the use of weapons:
1- The American Revolution
2- The conquest of the West
3- The Civil War

N.R.A.: National Rifle Association -> an association which protects the right to own a gun.

HW: you need to read the whole worksheet I gave you and highlight at least 5 words / phrases that could help you summarize the texts + learn the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution by heart.

Don't forget that you will take a mock exam on Saturday.

Hey,

today we first warmed up with a document entitled "Facebook Manners and You". You can watch it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

The document is a spoof / parody. It deals with social networks and more precisely Facebook.

The story is set in the 1950's or 60's when Facebook didn't exist. There is a discrepancy / difference / contrast between the fact that Facebook existed and the real story.

The story features Alice who comes back home from work and connects to Facebook to read the newsfeed of her friends and in particular the news of Timmy, her fiancé.

She realizes that Timmy has broken up with her. His relationship status is now "single". He has a new lover : Donna Whitehouse.
Alice starts a hate group in which she says that Timmy "doesn't buy things made in the USA" and "is a communist". Her revelation leads Timmy into being arrested.

Indeed, at that period, Mc Carthy was in power in the USA and there was a witch-hunt against communists.

The document intends to denounce the way some people use Facebook. They don't take the "common sense rules" of Facebook seriously.

Additional vocabulary:

The Internet:
- (to) connect to / log on to (my) Facebook account
- a type-writer
- a screen

Face expression:
- a haircut
- a well-cut beard
- to be well-combed

Structure:
- (to) lead (someone) into + V-ing

Source of humor:
- There is a discrepancy between time and topic.

Then we continued the correction of your mock exams focusing our attention on the attitudes of the characters and understanding why and how they evolved throughout the text. Here are some important phases and phrases to remember:

"to be written by ..."

HW: learn your lesson.

Hey,

today we first warmed up with the viewing of this video:

Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by Léna"

Then we continued the class with the reading and the global understanding of the text. Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by Léna"

Finally, we concentrated on the emotions of the characters in the text to understand the situation better.

Here are some important words to remember:

"to be written by Léna"

HW: don't forget that those of you who still haven't posted their poems should do it asap (and also think about sending me the link to their illustration...) + remember that you have a picture comment to turn in for after the holidays (cf. father and child with a gun). The questions are there to help you go deeper into the meaning of the picture but you should use a traditional methodology to analyse it.
