Kevin - Belfast - ambition: leave school - work for himself - father - brother - unemployed - discrimination against Catholics - go to England - America - never go back - future of Ireland: war, violence - Protestant - disagree - violence - girlfriend

+ write a conversation between Kevin and his girlfriend and their impossible love (100 - 150 words)

Hey,

today we first began the class by recalling what the legends were in Ireland. Here are some useful structures to do that:

"to be written by Camille"

Then we continued on working on the meaning of the text. Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by Camille"

Finally you had to find a title for each § in the text and you had to justify. Here is the title that we selected for the 1st §:

"to be written by Camille"

HW: for next time, you need to prepare an oral justification of the titles for each paragraph (+ your irregular verbs, of course).

Hey,

today in module, we started a new phonetics activity where you will have to learn how to pronounce words according to their phonetic transcriptions.

HW: for next time, you need to make a list of 10 words that we use in the French language but that are originally English and vice-versa, a list of 10 words English people use but actually come from the French. Write the English phonetics for each word.

Hey,

http://poulingail.edublogs.org/files/2009/03/leprechaun-gold-inverted.jpgtoday we first warmed up about the traditions and clichés in Ireland and here is what we said:

Clichés about Ireland:
Legend has it that / It is said that / there are leprechauns in Ireland who are at the bottom of the rainbow and bring luck to people with their pot of gold.
It is said that Irish people are all red heads.
It is believed that they love drinking beer and going to the pub.
It is thought that the weather is cold and rainy.
It is said that there are many sheep.

Then we continued studying the video from the BBC and here is what we said about it:

The scene takes place in a classroom in Derry. In the background, we can see a mural from Derry.
There are children (pupils) and teachers maybe. They are organising an art workshop in order to create a new mural.
Both sides of the community, Catholics and Protestants, participate in the project.
It's collective work.
The project is for peace: dialogue, discussion and mutual understanding are the way to go.

You can watch the final extracts below:

HW: review your irregular verbs as you will have a test on Tuesday, March 9th. Learn your lesson about Ireland.

Hey,

today we first did a test on irregular verbs. Then we continued studying the video about Northern Ireland and the murals in Derry.

Here is what we said about the match between the historical events and the paintings on the walls:

The 3 murals in black and white.
- First mural: It depicts how the youth of the bogside took on / fought against and won against the police and army.
It represents the civil war in Derry.

- Second mural: It deals with Bloody Sunday when 14 unarmed Catholic civilians died because of the British army.

- Third mural: It shows the Republican hunger strikes of 1981.

- Conclusion: All these murals in black and white recall bleak and stark events in Ireland whereas the colourful mural with the dove is a symbol for hope and change in the future.

You can watch the video again below:

HW: for next time you need to correct questions 10 & 11 from the text "Black Boy".

Hey,

today we started our new sequence which is going to deal with murals in Ireland and how they represent the past and hope for the future.

Guillaume went out of the class while you were watching an extract from a news broadcast and then you had to tell him what it was in English so that he could draw it on the board. Quite a good job as you can see below:

guillaume-dove

You can compare it to the video extract that you had to describe (last picture).
Then we talked about the document and here is what you wrote in your lesson copybooks:

Northern Ireland - Ulster

The murals / paintings on the walls / represent the past of Ireland. They depict scenes where soldiers are / waging war / at war.
They are in black and white.
On one house, there is another scene. It represents a bird, more specifically a dove. This animal is a symbol for peace.
It's colourful contrary to the other murals.
It's a symbol for hope and change in the future.

The scene takes place in Northern Ireland, more specifically in the bogside in Derry.
People hope for a better future. Derry used to be the crucible of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

You can watch the extract again below:

HW: I gave you a timeline of important events in Ireland. You need to learn it for next week as well as your irregular verbs.

Download the timeline here again:

Hey,

today during the first hour of class, we came back on the meaning of the document you had to analyse last Thursday. Here is what we said about it:

Before J.K.R wrote Harry Potter, she used to work in a coffee shop in the afternoon with her baby. She used to be broke and jobless but now she has become famous and rich. Thanks to her stories, J.K.R has many fans and she has much success in the world. She has transformed her 4 best-sellers into blockbuster movies.
Journalists have written a lot of rubbish and gossips about J.K.R. They have distorted and exaggerated her character. Maybe, they said she was a witch.

Grammar:
Used to exprime le passé révolu et dont la situation est différente aujourd'hui.

You can listen to the extract down here again:

Then I gave you your tests back.

HW: every Tuesday you will have a test on irregular verbs (10 by 10) because you don't know them. So get ready! You can find a list of these verbs at the end of your text books.
HW: don't forget that you have Questions #8 & 9 from the worksheet on the text "Moving" to compete on a separate sheet of paper. I'll pick them up on Thursday.

We didn't have time to finish, so I want you to finish the test (questions #8 and 9) for next time on a separate sheet of paper.

HW: you will have a test on an unknown document. Get prepared.
