Congratulations guys!

Today was quite awesome! Let's hope you liked it too. You can click the picture below to access all of the photos of your wonderful dishes.

Here is the worksheet that we used today to talk both about cooking and about Vincent (Tim Burton).

HW:

CT

Hello Carole,

thanks for your interest in my classes and I'm glad your Master Chef experience has also been a success. As for the recordings of your students, I'll be glad to hear what they are like. We didn't record the students' presentations. We had so many things going on at the same time on that day with so many groups doing so many different things that I haven't found the time to record anything but to make a picture of each final dish. It was a real SUCCESS and the students were really able to communicate and explain what they had done and how they had done it, comment on their "candidate", explain the history of their dishes... etc... I'll be posting the whole "sequence" very soon on the blog in the teachers' corner.

However, I do have some videos of the dishes in the making but I haven't asked my students yet whether I could publish them. I'll keep you posted asap (before the end of the school year, i.e. within 2 weeks). If you don't see anything on the blog or if I don't answer you personnally again, do send me another email as a reminder.

Until then,

Take care,
Philippe Hattais.

Hello, thanks for your answer. I'll send you the three videos I have of masterchef as soon as my pupils have managed to upload them (might take some time...). I'm also really interested in the sequence on Vincent Price. I took my pupils to the exhibition in paris a few weeks ago and we've been working on Edward scissors'hands.I'd like to know how you guide them with the dubbing. Could I give you a ring some time to ask you how you work with them on that project?

Take care,
CT

No problem!

I had planned to bring them to the exhibition in Paris indeed too... but I went there and I couldn't figure out a way for it to be really interesting as far as the language is concerned...

There are supposed to have finished their projects by tomorrow... so I'll see whether this experience is actually worth sharing, depending on the results of the dubbing. It's actually pretty easy to do; a bit time consuming though but everyone can do (they are accustomed to using AUDACITY and they all have Windows Movie Maker on the computer (it's pre installed on ALL computers with Windows).

If it does work, like for the Master Chef sequence I'll post a sequence handout for teachers on the blog in the teachers' corner.

Take care,

Philippe.

PS: I'll be glad to see you videos indeed... argh... I still need to acutally GRADE my students'... argh...

Did you keep a sample of each dish to taste them again and again and thus be as fair as possible...!!I almost had an indigestion after tasting ALL their dishes because they forced me too, telling me that I had to be in the project all the way through!... The exhibition was really nice and I didn't have any good idea either on how to make it interesting in class, but I took them there to make them discover his universe and help them have a better understanding of the creative background of his films. After the exhibition, we spent an hour in class commenting on some pictures that I had taken from the big book of the exhibition (that I had bought for myself!!)and which enabled me to introduce some vocabulary about fantasy, caricatures etc..
I'll go and see how movie maker works, I have it on my computer.
Take care,

Carole

Well I did eat a little bit of everything they made (I had 3 other colleagues with me grading their presentations + a group of two students also assessing them and another pair tasting and also asking questions... so in the end I didn't get to eat so much food... poor me... lol... 11 dishes total).

Philippe.

PS: I also purchased the big book... in English... and I had to import it since they didn't have any copies left... well well... I bought the small book of the exhibition too... as well as the whole series of DVDs to watch the ones I hadn't watched... yeah... I got completely crazy with that project... it seems that my students are all panicky with Windows Movie Maker... they keep sending me messages tonight telling me they have troubles... argh... and their presentation is due for tomorrow.... ........ :s

I actually stayed up really really late to set up download helper and then movie maker. It seems indeed easy to handle once it is set up but the only (major!)problem I had was to import the video from my computer I always got the same message "fichier non valide ou endommagé". I tried all the different posbilities to download it(téléchargement, or téléchargement et conversion...)but I always ended up with the same note from WWM.Could you tell me which option to select to download it so that it will be smooth and easy to import then.I think I'll have a try myself (for the dubbing),just for fun.I hope your students managed to work something out...:)

Take care,
Carole

the better option is to use the .mp4 file which is accepted in WMM. The other solution is to convert it if it still doesn't work into a format that will be accepted for sure, i.e. .wmv   (you can use the software called SUPER to do this... it's a bit hard to understand how it works at first but it really is a powerful and useful free tool).

I haven't had all of the videos from my students but I have watched some already and I have to say some are pretty nice... that's coooool! I'll keep you posted on the blog as soon as I have more time to write the "séquence" completely...
