Hey,

today we finished correcting your tests on the text entitlted "Black Boy".
Here is the correction from question 1 to question 9:

1) The story takes place in classroom.

2)
a) "She" refers to the teacher.
b) "you" refers to Richard Wright
c) "them" refers to the girls and boys in his classroom.

3) A new pupil arrived at the school. His name is Richard Wright. The teacher asks him to spell his name and helps him because he is shy.

4)
a) Blackboard = the place where the teacher writes the lesson.
b) (to) giggle = (to) laugh at
c) flushed hotly = became red with shame

5)
a-IV "coax" = demander pour obtenir qqch en retour
b-III "whisper" = dire en chuchotant
c-II "soothingly" = de manière apaisante

d-I "desperately" = de manière désespérée

 
6) He is embarrassed: "The children began the titter and I flushed hotly"
7) "My mind went blank" means b-"I could not think of anything"


8)She is reassuring: l.22 "Smiling at me to give me confidence". L.22 "Placed her hand tenderly". L.26 "Said soothingly".

9)
a) False l.8 "the many girls and boys"
b) false l.22 "smiling at me to give me confidence"
c) False l.1 "I was still shy and half paralysed when in the presence of a crowd" or L.46"no doubt [...] I could talk fluently and expressively when I was sure of myself".



HW: for Tuesday March, 9th 2010 (just after the holidays), you need to answer questions 10 & 11 on a separate sheet of paper.
