Today we first warmed up about a topical issue: the swine flu vaccination campaign.
Here is what we wrote in the copybooks:
Today, you can get vaccinated against the swine flu if you received a coupon / a
voucher. At the beginning, people didn't want to get vaccinated but now there is a
flow of people who want a vaccine shot. The government may want us to get vaccinated because they want to use their stock of vaccines. They may also want to lower the epidemic. They want everybody to be healthy.
Remember: Structure = WANT (someone) TO ...
Then we corrected the grammar exercises about present simple and present Be+ing.
Exercice 1
1) Look! John is putting on his coat. He's going for a walk.
2) I go to London every day. I work near Piccadilly Circus.
3) What is Mary doing now? She's having a bath.
4) She doesn't like dogs. She prefers cats.
5) Bill always writes with his left hand.
6) The children study French this year/ They are studying French this year.
7) What is he doing to his car now? I think he is washing it.
8) Tom is in his room. He is doing his homework.
Exercise 2
1) is raining
2) get up
3) costs
4) are you waiting
5) is coming
6) take
7) doesn't like
8) seems
Here are the main things to know (in French) about the differences:
- Present Be+ing = situation en cours de déroulement et/ou commentaire du locuteur (souvent idée de projet [futur proche] et d'énervement).
- Present simple = définition, caractéristiques de qqn ou qqch (utlisé avec les verbes d'état, de goût, d'opinion, ... notamment).
NB: Notez la différence entre "he thinks the teacher is too severe" (verbe d'opinion, état = penser) et "he is thinking of
changing class because the teacher is too severe"... (verbe qui exprime un projet; le sens de /think/ change et devient "envisager", "projeter"...). Remarquez au passage la différence de
construction avec la préposition OF dans le 2ème exemple.
Don't forget that you will have a test on Friday. I'll be posting another message so that you can have an overview of what I'll be asking you then.
Take care,
M. Hattais.
NB: I gave you some new documents for the next sequence. Keep them with you and don't lose them. I'll be uploading the documents anyhow in case you might forget them.
