Hey,
today after making a short warm up we talked about immigration to the US again.
My mother is 92 years old
- You must be kidding me!
- You must be joking!
- You must be pulling my leg!
- I can't believe you!
If that's true, she shouldn't go out. She may slip on ice and she may break a hip.

Correction of the translation exercise:
Check your vocabulary :
1) For millions of immigrants, the USA represented the Promised Land, a land of plenty and free entreprise.
2) Immigrants had to flee their countries for political, religious and economical reasons.
3) Some suffered from hunger, unemployment, persecutions and discrimination.
4) They were often destitute and dreamed/dreamt of starting all over/starting from scratch in America. They hoped to succeed and be finally rich and well-fed.
5) The new comers didn't expect to be considered as cheap workforce.

Comment on the title and the picture pp. 30:
- "caged bird" : Ana is probably "caged" because she is not free. She is undocumented. She is an illegal
immigrant/alien.
- "sings" : However, she can "sing" because she may have a job and she hopes she can make her
dreams come true. She may be integrated to society.
HW: for tomorrow, you need to verify your hypotheses by reading the text.
PS: I'll be grading your poems as soon as possible but I don't think I will have them ready by tomorrow.
