Hey,

today we finished correcting your essays with some pieces of advice I gave you. Here are some sentences highlighting the difference between Preterit simple and Preterit Be+ing:

I was dreaming when I woke up suddenly.
They were studying when she fell into sleep.
I was standing alone when my friend sat next to me.
I was sitting in class when I heard somebody yell.

Then we continued with a quick recap of how important verb speech were in a dialogue. I also gave you a recap worksheet about them. Here is what you need to remember:

- The sentences of the dialogue must be put between inverted commas.
- the punctuation appears inside the inverted commas.
- You'd better keep the subject verb order for speech verbs. Ex : "Let me finish!" she exclaimed.
- Start a new line for each different speaker.
- You have to give information about the voice, behaviour, and feelings of the characters.

And the worksheet:

Finally we corrected parts of your oral comprehension worksheet. Here is the correction that we noted down:

1) Sonny is a robot

3)
a) The passage is comical
b) This is comical because there is a discrepancy/a gap between what she thinks and what is actually in front of her.

4)
a) What an impressive wound !
b) How repaired you are !

5)
a) She is very impressed by his scar even if she is a doctor.
b) He has the arm of a robot whereas the girl doesn't.
c) The man driving the car was killed instantly while his daughter was still alive.
d) The robot saved him although he had asked the robot to save the girl.

6) Contrastive accentuation on :
- logical (as opposed to sentimental)
- 45 (as opposed to 11)
- Sarah (as opposed to Detective Spooner)

Explanation : logical est accentué par opposition à illogical. 45% est accentué pour souligner la disproportion de chance par rapport à celle de Sarah qui n'est que de 11%. Sarah est accentué par opposition au détective.

7) According to Spooner, robots don't have feelings. That's why Sonny decided to save him instead of the girl because he had more chances to survive. A human being would have saved the girl because she was younger but robots don't react like humans: they are mechanical.

HW
: you will take your final test on Friday. It will be divided into two parts.
First part = Vocabulary (structure de l'opinion + texte The Fun They Had + leçon) and Grammar (Exclamations + Question tag)

On this day, boyfriends are supposed to be romantic. They are supposed to buy presents/gifts to their girlfriends. According to Juliette, the perfect present is flowers or jewels (like a nakelace). Although Aya finds it's romantic, she believes it's a cliché. She would rather have a present which reminds her of her love story. As for Jonathan, he is thinking of buying a silver ring. Corentin thinks only men should buy presents.

Do we have to revise the two sheets of vocabulary about school ?
Comment number3 posted by Félicien on 04/02/2010 at 19h25
not necessarily no. But there will be vocabulary questions about the lesson and "The Fun They Had". So there will be vocabulary dealing with school but not a whole bunch of it.
Take care,
M. Hattais.
