you first took a test and we recapitulated what we had said last time.
Then we added some information about the situation and about the characters:
The Irish civilians act together against the army. They might haveset a
trap against the soldiers.
The soldiers thought Jerry was a terrorist / a member of the IRA.
The soldiers were : not correct / mistaken / wrong.
The soldiers think people are terrorists. A lawyer may need to defend the thief against the accusations of the gunmen.
We finally worked on a text dealing with the Guilford Four who were wrongly accused and sentenced to life
imprisonment because of the bombing at the inn.

The Historical Truth
In the Name of the Fathertakes liberties with the truth as the
Guilford Four – who ______________________________ bombing a pub inGuildford,Englandin 1974, killing five people – and the Maguire Seven, ______________________ being their support network, were judged at different
times.
The aim of the IRA bombing campaign was to “bring the war home” toEngland. Soon after, four young Irish people _________________________ and kept under __________________________ where they confessed to the bombing after being
under ___________________ and suffering psychological and physical violence. In 1975, under the witch-hunt atmosphere which pervadedEnglandat
the time, the Four ______________________ to life imprisonment.
In 1988, under growing public pressure, the police were assigned to investigate the 1975 police
procedures. They discovered a series of appalling practices: coercion of chief defence _______________________, the “loss” of important documents that would have proved the Four’s
______________________, and downright lies under ______________. Several of the policemen involved then stood ______________ themselves.
The Guilford Four ______________________ in 1989 in the light of new __________________ revealed by
the investigation, but adjustment has been painful, as they have all experienced post traumatic stress syndrome due to the long, _________________ imprisonment. In June 2000, 25 years later, Tony
Blair became the first person in authority to apologise for the miscarriage of _____________________.
Finally, I gathered all your "type bac" tests that you had to do at home. Those who haven't turned them in today for some
reason need to put them in my mailbox by Tuesday.
we did a quick recap of what we had said before about the video and we continued to comment on it with another scene. We made hypotheses about what was going to happen and what happened. Then we
checked what you had supposed with the screening of the following scene.
Here is what we wrote:
The soldiers must protect the civilians against the IRA. The soldiers think people are terrorists. A lawyer mayhave to defend the thief against the accusations of the gunmen.
A war / riotmight happen / break out between the
character / Irish civilians and the gunmen / British soldiers.
The Irish civilians act together against the army. They might haveset a trap against
the soldiers.
The soldiers thought Jerry was a terrorist / a member of the I.R.A.
The soldiers were not correct / were wrong / were mistaken. They made a mistake.
Exprimer l’hypothèse: - We can suppose the IRA planted the bomb in the restaurant =
- The IRA might have planted the bomb.
Remember
You can watch the scenes again below:
HW: apprenez votre vocabulaire ainsi que le vocabulaire de la séance précédente car vous aurez à chaque cours un devoir écrit de leçon.
today we continued our sequence on Ireland. We did a quick recap of what had been said before and we confirmed our hypotheses with the viewing of the corresponding scene that you can watch again
below:
Here is what we said:
"The scene actually takes place in England in 1974. It is in an inn where people are gathering to chat and to have
dinner when there is a bomb / explosion. There is a lot of casualties for sure."
"Maybe, the I.R.A. planted the bomb. They are a terrorist group. I.R.A. means Irish
Republican Army. The I.R.A.'s intentions are political. They fight off British presence."
Then, we watched another scene. You had to spot where it took place and when:
"The scene takes place in the streets of Belfast, in Ulster / Northern Ireland, in
the early 70's. Soldiers are looking for gunmen. A man is on a roof. He is stealing
metal. He is a thief but he is not a gunman".
You can watch the scene again below:
HW: for next time, you have to make up a sentence with the following words from the document to imagine what the story is about:
As you already have much to do for this Friday and you need more time to complete your "type bac" exercise, I agreed to give you one more week. There will be no other
postponing.
For those who need help with the subject, you will find some below:
I played the beginning of a video but without the image and you had to guess where the scene might take place and justify your choices.
Here is the extract again:
Here is what we said:
- about Ireland:
"Ireland is divided into two parts. The first part, Ulster, belongs to the United
Kingdom whereas / while the other part, Eire, is independent. Ulster is mainly Protestant whereas/ whileEire is mostly Catholic. The I.R.A wants
Ulster to be free whereas/ whilethe United Kingdom wants to keep Ulster."
-about the document:
"I can hear the sounds of drums and of bagpipes. I recognize a song by the Irish
band U2. These sounds are the clues how I can say the scene might take place in
Ireland.
The drums grow quickerand quicker, louderand louder. It creates tension and suspense.
Then there is the explosion of shattered / broken glass."
"It might take place in the street, at school, or at a concert because I can hear people who are talking / chatting."
= more + adjectif long and more + adjectif long ou comme c'est le cas
ici: adjectif court + er and adjectif court + er.
We'll watch the video with the image next time so that you can confirm if your hypotheses were right or not.
HW: For those who haven't turned in their essay on technology, I need them in my mailbox before 8 p.m. tonight. Cliquez sur "Do you need help?"
+ For Friday, Oct 2nd 2009 : Find information about the I.R.A. + Written comprehension test.
Today, after having a little chit chat about super powers, we finished studying the document about robot soldiers.
We filled in your worksheet with elements from the document making a brief summary and trying to go into details.
For next time, you need to be prepared to present this document to the class in English and be ready to give your opinion about it(5-minute
presentation). You must also think of questions that I might ask you.
A question I could ask: "would you like to become a marine in the American army? why?"....
you took a 45-minute test. I will try and give you the results next time I see you. I hope for you that at least your vocabulary and lessons are known... as for the oral comprehension test, I'm
aware it is not easy but it has to be done!
we corrected the exercise that you had to do for last time. We noticed that in a compound noun, the word that was the most important one was the last one. When you translate, you translate
it first. For example :
- a robot hand : une main de robot.
- a brain implant : un implant cérébral. ...
We then finished analysing the link words (mots de liaison) that you will need to use in your essays from now on. You need to know their use and their meaning. For example:
- Yet: pourtant.
- However: cependant.
- ...
HW:
For Friday 25th of Sept. - Vocabulary and lesson tests
For Wednesday 30th of Sept. - Essay: Are you afraid of technology? why or why not? (200 words).
"The operation was a groundbreaking experiment. It was the first time
such an operation had been performed. His experiment was a success.Professor Warwick believes communication between men and computers is possible. Computers can upgrade/enhance people's abilities. They can make us stronger."
VOC :
- an ability
- (to) be able to
- (to) enable
- (to) perform an experiment = (to) carry out an experiment
- (to) upgrade = (to) enhance
GR :
- such a / such an = sert à donner de l'emphase.
In the second part of the hour, we had time to correct some questions from your worksheet.
"In the future, this technology may enable the handicapped or it may enable people to communicate without speaking. According to Warwick, the world may
be governed by computers."
We, then, studied very quickly the time references.
- Last March / In June --> preterit
- For the moment --> present
- In 2050 / someday / down the road --> future
HW : for next time, you need to complete "STEP 5" from the worksheet I gave out to you this morning.
Today, we listened to an audio document with Tim Weiner, a reporter for the New York Times.
Here is what we said about it.
"The document is a report by a New York Times journalist about a new generation of soldiers. They are stronger than human beings because they can't bleed, they can't
get captured / getkidnapped / be held
hostage, they are not afraid, they obey the rules, they can't forget orders... It is a real advantage. Normally, the role of soldiers is to protect the safety of the inhabitants but there are risks. With these robots, the risks are reduced to a minimum."
You can listen to the whole document again here :
You will have an oral comprehension test on the last part of this document soon. I advise you to listen to it carefully to be prepared.
Today we continued studying the text entitled "The Bionic Man". We corrected the vocabulary hunt you had to complete and here are important words to remember :
- (to) trade information
- mind-machine communication
- a chip
- an experiment
- (to) upgrade
- (to) implant
- (to) remove
We said :
"The operation is a groundbreaking experiment. It was the first time such an operation had been performed. Professor Warwick
believes communication between man and a computer is possible. His experiment is a success. Computers can upgrade people's abilities. They can make us
stronger."
ex : strong-er (than...) ------ clever-er (than...) : attention à la prononciation de ce mot
MAIS
ex : more intelligent (than...).
HW : for next time, you need to complete the rest of the worksheet.
You really had a bad attitude today not cooperating to make the class go towards progress. You should be ashamed of it...
However, during the hour, we succeeded in saying some things about the swine flu :
"The swine flu is a type of flu that authorities are afraid of. It may become quite
lethal and that's why the government has taken drastic measures. When you have the flu, you have a high fever / temperature, you sneeze a lot, and you feel sick".
Symptoms :
- fever
- cough (la toux)
- sore throat (mal de gorge, type angine)
- body aches / headaches
- chills (des frissons)
- fatigue (état de fatigue extrême)
The bionic man is the title of the text we have begun to study together.
Here is an extra copy :
""Bionic" means half human and half robot. For instance, a bionic hand is much stronger than a regular hand. It can me made of metal and is very resistant."
We read the text once and you had to read it on your own again, highlighting words related to "body parts" and "robots".
HW : for next time, you need to complete step 1 of your worksheet. See you then, with a better attitude !
Here a copy of your worksheet :
Today was the first class I had with you
guys so we introduced ourselves and I gave you out a copy ofthe rules that will be followed in English.
We then talked a little about Michael Jackson's burial and needed to review wh- questions :
Who --> porte sur la personne
Where --> porte sur le lieu
When --> porte sur le temps
What happened --> porte sur les faits
what happened : he was buried / fires in the North of L.A. who : Michael Jackson's family and friends, the police
where : Los Angeles (attention à la prononciation), California
when : yesterday at 7 p.m. local time, this morning at 4 a.m. in Paris, more than 2 months after he died.
"I find it shocking to know that he was buried only yesterday, more than two months after he died. To my mind, it is really weird. I also believe it is strange that so many policemen were present when they should be at work with the
fires. They should help evacuate people in danger instead of protecting the dead body".
