Today Lindsay and Sabrina presented their current issues. Both found an article in the Independent, a British quality paper. Both articles dealt with the environment.

Am expecting Lindsay's notes.

Then we worked on the text p 80 of our books.
We finished our lesson with the correction of the translation of the paper : Single-minded firms.

You are off to do your internships. I wish you good luck.
CARRY ON SPEAKING, LISTENING TO AND READING ENGLISH.

Today, we were  to correct the exercices about the text Back to School. As many of you did not do the exercises, I made you do them in class.
But first :

Verbes irréguliers

Infinitif : to forget ... Prétérit: forgot ... Participe passé : forgotten  ... traduction : Oublier
Infinitif : to get ... prétérit : got ... participe passé : got ... traduction : obtenir
Infinitif : to tell ... prétérit : told ... participe passé : told ... traduction : dire, raconter
Infinitif : to send ... prétérit : sent ... participe passé : sent ... traduction : envoyer
Infinitif : to make ... prétérit : made ... participe passé : made ... traduction : faire, fabriquer
Infinitif : to freeze ... prétérit : froze ... participe passé : frozen ... traduction : geler

Infinitif : have to ... prétérit : had to ... participe passé : had to ... traduction : être obligé de
Infinitif : to see ... prétérit : saw ... participe passé : seen ... traduction : voir

Attention : Get - 1er sens "OBTENIR" quand on le trouve seul
Ex : I got a 20/20 in English

- 2ème sens avec "HAVE" : have got = on ne le traduit pas
Ex : I have got two sisters

- 3ème sens: To get + Adj. = devenir
Ex : I'm getting angry = je deviens en colère = je m'énerve

We also corrected the exercise on CAN'T- MUST and MAY
CAN'T: Impossibilité

Thank you Jérémy for your notes.

First we did a quiz  about the quantifiers.

Then we did a recap of what we did last week.

What did we speak about?

We spoke about:

OVERTIME = les heures supplémentaires.

Overtime  is when employees do extra work.

Overtime is when employees do long hours

Overtime is when employees work more than the normal time

Debate : The 35 hour-work week

Arguments

FOR

Arguments AGAINST

EMPLOYERS

Because employees are exhausted and don’t work as well they would if they worked less.

Their charges are higher.

EMPLOYEES

Employees have more time for their families, for their leisure.

It allows them to fight against unemployment by hiring more people to share wealth.

They have to work more quickly and more efficiently.

Consequences of long hours on employees:

Health issues

Vocabulary :

Chômage: unemployment

Embaucher: to hire

  • by + V+ ing: au moyen de, en + V+ ing
  • to + V : pour + V (le but)

leisure : loisirs

high – low

élevé – bas

être oblige de: to have to + V

to lead to: entraîner

huge: immense

= The work-week: la semaine de travail

In France the 35 hours-work week was decided and implemented in the 1990’s by a socialist government ( Mrs Aubry)

Exercice de traduction:

1) Les employés doivent faire des heures supplémentaires.

Employees must do long hours.

Employees  have to do long hours

2) Il y a de nombreuses façons de trouver du travail.

There are a lot of ways to find work.

3) L’immense augmentation des réseaux sociaux permettent aux gens de communiquer d’avantage.

The huge increase of social networks enables people to communicate more.

4) Le travail supplémentaire entraîne des problèmes de santé pour les hommes surmenés.

Long hours lead to health issues for overworked men.

Overtime leads to health issues for overworked men.

Thank you Fatou for your notes
