Hi guys,

today you all made brief but interesting presentation about one work of art by Banksy that you had selected. Then you had to imitate Holly accent while reading your brochures so as to get prepared for the conference you are going to give in two weeks.

Here are the recordings so that you can train again from home:

- A girl

- Two women

- Do it yourself - Landscape

- Man on a bench

- Campbell Soup Cans

- Linda

HW:

Hey guys,

today you had to report your findings about the text and especially the two doctors. Here is what we said about them (1st part and 2nd part):

1st part : The inspector

We don't know his name. We just understand his role. He asks questions to see if Jacob knows how to count and how to speak English.
He wants to check if he is healthy, that's why he is interested in his leg. He is suspicious; consequently he sends him to another doctor.
He's very serious and strict. He is not understanding and rather aggressive : that's why Jacob is scared and intimidated.

2nd part : The doctor

Contrary to the inspector, Carl Travers is much kinder/ sweeter/ nicer. He's more relaxed and understanding.
He is humane. He is interested in understanding why Jacob is sweating, why he is afraid. He wants to know his story.

---------------------------------------
Voc :  (to) know how to + BV

--> compétences, savoir-faire

Ex :  I know how to ...

- ... write
- ... read
- ... send a text message w/o looking
- ... ride a bike

HW:

Hey guys,

today you had to report your findings about the text and especially the two doctors. Here is what we said about them (1st part and 2nd part):

2nd part: The doctor
Contrary to the inspector, Carl Travers is kinder and warmer. He doesn't gives orders and he tries to reassure Jacob. He gives him advice: he should calm down. He asks questions to know the reasons why Jacob doesn't want to go back to Russia. He is interested in his life. He cares for him. He is humane.

Voc: kind / warm / humane
(to) reassure
(to) be interested in...
(to) care for...
(to) calm down

the reason why

Then we classified all the verbs ending with /ed/ in a chart with their correct pronunciation:

Phonetics:
[t]
looked, marked, ached, asked, laughed

[d]
obeyed, leaned, realized, pulled, filled, moved, healed, entered, surprised, straightened

[id]
blurted

HW:

Hi guys,

today we first talked about this extract from the movie Philadelphia as a warm up:

Here is what we said about it:

Warm up : Philadelphia

The document is an extract from the movie Philadelphia. It features two men, a white man (Andrew) and a black man (a lawyer). It takes place at the lawyer's office. Andrew has come because he wants to sue his employers for firing / dismissing / sacking him wrongfully.
He thinks they have fired him because he has AIDS. When Andrew says those words, the lawyer is terrified. He's more than ill-at-ease. He looks at everything he touches and he stares at him suspiciously and anxiously. He's afraid of being contaminated with HIV / of being sick too.

VOC:

an acronym (AIDS, HIV)
to sue: to go to justice / court
to fire / dismiss / sack
wrongfully
ill-at-ease -> to stare at / to gaze at
AIDS
HIV positive
to be contaminated with...

Then we continued the lesson with analysis of the picture from googlemaps. Here is what are some of the keywords from your speech:

Key words

to warn drivers
to protect illegal immigrants
to avoid many casualties
considered / depicted as animals or criminals
shocking

HW:

More information about the movie Philadelphia here. You can watch it here in English if you'd like to.

Hi guys,

today we first reviewed how to present any kind of documents. Here is what we said for the presentation of the extract:

"to be written by..."

Then we continued with a deeper analysis of the action taking place in the document and about what really happened as well as the reasons explaining the attitudes of the characters. Here is what we said:

"to be written by..."

HW:

http://senshot.com/files/2011/03/karma1.jpgHi guys,

today we first worked on the notion of "karma" in India and we corrected what you had to do for homework about the famous people and their karma, therefore their possible belonging to such and such a caste. Here is what we said about it:

"to be written by Nathalie"

Then in the 2nd part of the hour, you had to discuss about the condition and the place of women in society: sexism and gender difference. Here is what you have achieved so far. We'll continued next time:

What is sexism?

- It's a type of discrimination.

- It's about someone who prefers one gender to another and about different treatment.

- It deals with unequal treatment between men and women.

Is sexism still a problem today?

- There are laws in some countries that discriminate against one group of people based on their genders, e.g. the right to vote, the right to work outside the home.

- There are salary differences.

- Some women don't have access to education.

- There is only a small proportion of women in high positions.

- It's hard for women to access certain jobs.

- People can be stereotyped, e.g. women do the housework, girls like pink and boys like blue...

Then Holly gave you some documents that you had to work with for the rest of the class. You aslo had to come up with titles for each group of documents you had.

HW:

Hi guys,

today we first warmed up with whether you had already been abroad or not. Here is what we said:

Warm up: Have you ever been to a foreign country / abroad / outside of France.

+ Yes, I have visited many foreign countries. I've been to Italy, Mexico, Belgium,...
I went to Poland two years ago to visit my family.

- No, I've never been abroad. I stay in France during my holidays and I go to "Charente maritime" because my father loves it.

Then we continued talking about the text and studying it in more details. We especially focused on time elements to determine when the scene could take place. Here is what we said about it:

We can assume that the scene takes place... / The scene may take place... a long time after the pogrom because Jacob's wound is healed: he doesn't limp a lot anymore. He says that the long pogrom isn't over yet; if he goes back to Russia he will get killed.

Voc :

slightly = not a lot

  [ai]
-> He doesn't limp a lot anymore = he limps slightly

a wound
     [u:]

to heal = to be in  good health again
     [i:]                                 [e]
a Cossack = a Russian soldier

a bullet

HW:

Hi guys,

Warm up: Have you been to a foreign country?

+ Yes, I have been to Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and Spain...
I went to Russia 2 years ago to see my family. They live in Moscow, the capital city and also in Siberia.

- No, I have never been outside of France. I always stay at home during the holidays and travelling doesn't attract me.

Vocabulary:

- a foreign country (= outside of France)
- in the South

Then we continued talking about the text and studying it in more details. We especially focused on time elements to determine when the scene could take place. Here is what we said about it:

The main events and main character:

The scene may take place a long time after the pogrom because Jacob only «limps slightly» = He is in much better health.
We can suppose he is between 30 or 40 years old / about 30 / in his 30's / He may be about 30.
He is Russian.
He is Jewish.

Goals:
He wants to start a new life in the USA.
However, before entering the USA, he has to go through Ellis Island.

Vocabulary:

- to heal= to be in good health again

HW:

Hi guys,

today we worked on your movie titles, story lines and posters and you had to make a presentation in front of the class to defend what you thought was the best movie.

Here are some of your ideas:

It makes me want to see the movie.

It sums up the story very well.

I can relate to this story.

It's quite original, interesting and very realistic.

It complements and completes the title.

I absolutely love it.

I like it when there is a twist in the story.

HW:

PS: I'll ask Holly to post the acutal posters online as soon as we have finished this activity.

http://photocompetition.upclive.com/original/554257/liberty_island__ellis_island___manhatten/statue_of_liberty_liberty_island_ellis_island_manhatten_new_york.jpgHi guys,

today you first wrote down the assumptions you had made last time. Here they are:

He might escape and flee from Russia.

Jacob may 50% ... /Jacob might 20%  ...:
. -... try and get help
. -... change his name
. -... go to another village
. -... escape from Russia
. -... hide from the soldiers
. -... warn other Jewish villages

Jacob 's actual story:
-> After the pogrom in his village, Jacob escaped Russia to the USA / he ran away from misery in order to have a better life.

Then we continued the class, listening to what had happened of Jacob. You can listen to the document here again:

Here is what we said about the document:

-> Now he is at Ellis Island, an island in the USA near the Statue of Liberty (in NYC)

-> In the document, there are 4 voices :

. . . - the narrator
. . . - Jacob
. . . - the 1st doctor
. . . - the 2nd doctor

-> We learn that Jacob fled his country in order to / so as to become American; so / consequently / that's why on Ellis Island some people ask him question.

HW:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qCy-yDTKGzg/S9wB_-DYm_I/AAAAAAAAATY/1OjZtPXI_ME/s1600/Caste+System+India.jpgHi guys,

today you first took a vocabulary test about shopping. You can dowload the answers here to get prepared for your final test on Thursday.

Then we had a quick warm up about Jamie Oliver's show. Here is what we said about it:

Jamie Oliver’s food revolution

AIM/POINT/GOAL

Ø    To fight against obesity

Ø    To change people’s food habits (hamburgers, chips, nuggets, pizza)

          JUNK FOOD:

Ø  High in fat = greasy

Ø  Unhealthy

Ø  To make children stop eating junk food

Ø  To make them be disgusted

Then we continued talking about the dabbawalas and you had to find why we could say that their company was a success. Here is what you said:

"to be written by Nathalie"

Finally, we studied the caste system in India and how it worked. You had to determine where the dabbawalas could be. Here is the name of the caste that they most likely belong to (+the reasons):

Have you been to India?

Ø    No, because the plane ticket is too expensive and it doesn’t attract me.

Ø    No, but I would like to go to and visit Mumbai and the cities where Bollywood movies are filmed.

N o, but why not? However I don't know anybody there. If I went to India, I would like to visit the country with a local (someone who lives in the country, not a foreigner)

A foreigner (someone who doesn’t live in the country)

The notion of Karma

Your goal when you believe in Karma:

You want to behave in the best possible way to climb up the social pyramid when you are reincarnated.

Actually your goal is to stop being reincarnated and reach Nirvana.

At the top of the social ladder, there are the Brahmans who are the most privileged caste. At the bottom, there are the Sudras, the least privileged caste.

Most Indians are “untouchables” it means that they are not part of society.

For example: Jack the Ripper would be an outcast because he was a killer/ a murderer.

On the contrary Lady Diana would probably be a brahman because she helped people with her charity and she was a princess.

HW:

Hey guys,

today you talked about whether you thought graffiti should be allowed and considered as art or not and then you did some research to select and comment on another work by Banksy. You had to:

- select a piece

- find where it is displayed

- the technique used

- the political message behind the picture (and whether you agree or not)

- your reactions to the picture

For next time, you need to complete your presentation as you will talk about the graffiti at the beginning of the class. Try to be as thorough and original as you will get an important grade for that.

Take care,

Mr Hattais.

Documents:

Here are the pictures the different groups in the class have selected for an analysis

http://photoshoptutorials.ws/images/stories/DriedBloodSplattersPhotoshopBrushes_F902/image_6.pngHi guys,

today you first took a vocabulary test. I hope you did alright. I'll give you your results asap.

Then we continued the lesson with a quick recap of what you had said earlier and we moved on thinking about Jacob's future. What will he do in the future?

Here are the hypotheses that you wrote down in your copybooks:

Exprimer une hypothèse:
Will -->100%    (= future)
May --> 50%
Might --> 20%
- He may try and find friends or family in Russia before leaving.
- He may get revenge because he is angry.
- He may try to kill the soldiers whom he considers as killers.
- He may be hunted by the soldiers.
- He may be hide in the forest / in another village.
- He might leave Russia and go to another country.
- He might die of starvation.
- His injury may get infected.
- He may be capured.
- He may come back to his village to bury his family.

We insisted on how to construct an hypothesis in English and saw the differences between 3 modal auxiliaries (will / may / might).

Finally, we read the very first lines of the text I gave you and you discovered that Jacob had in fact immigrated to the US... We'll learn more about him next time.

HW:

- apprendre la leçon.

http://photoshoptutorials.ws/images/stories/DriedBloodSplattersPhotoshopBrushes_F902/image_6.pngHi guys,

today we first corrected the homework you had to do about the events concerning Jacob during the pogrom. Here is the timeline we finally drew after you spoke:

The scene is a pogrom. It takes place at the beginning of the 20th century in a Russian village

-> There was an assault
-> The soldiers killed everyone
-> Jacob tried to protect the rabbi
-> They killed the rabbi
-> he screamed because he was angry and scared
-> he tried to escape
-> he was shot by a soldier
-> he couldn't run away because he was hurt
-> he took a torch to scare the horse
-> he killed a soldier
-> he took the horse
-> he left the village
-> the whole village was on fire

Then we continued by working on how to pronounce /ed/ endings in verbs. Here is the chart and the rule in French that we elaborated:

"to be written by ..."

Finally, you made hypotheses about Jacob's possible future and we saw how "may / might" could be used in this context. Here is what you said:

- He might escape and flee from Russia.

- He might surrender.

- He may come back and get revenge.

- He may change his name not to be recognized.

- The soldiers may hunt him.

- He may tell other villages that the Russians are arriving.

- He may take refuge in another village.
