Hey,
today you were selected and gathered into several teams of 2 or 3 students. You had to create 5 exercises based on the text that we are studying: "Moving". Each team had to work on one particular
data corresponding to their Wh- questions words. We'll see next time how you did and what are the good and bad questions.
I'll see you next time.

Hey, today we first warmed up about the natural disaster that took place in Port-au-Prince a week ago. Here is what we said:
The earthquake in Haiti : a natural disaster
There was a huge earthquake in Haiti last week
There is huge human damage / the number of victims was a huge.
The number of victims = death toll
More than 200 000 people died = two hundred thousand
Phonology: mots en -age [i]
Then we continued speaking about Harry Potter and corrected the vocabulary exercise. Here is the correction:
- dans ses rêves les plus fous : in her/his wildest dreams
- traduction : translation
- fou / folle : insane
- s'attendre à : expect
- prévoir : predict
Finally we explained again how to use the present perfect and you had to perform a role play in pair work with questions to ask your neighbour.
Here is what we wrote on the board:
Pair work :
- Amine has never read a Harry Potter
book in English.
-> Djulian hasn't read a Harry
Potter book in English either because reading is harder than speaking in English.
- But Amine has already watched Harry
Potter movie and he liked it but he has never watched a movie in English.
He prefers watching movies in French.
HW: for next time, you need to prepare a report about your partner and complete the exercise I gave you about the present perfect.

Hey,
today we first spoke about violence at school as a warm up. Here is what we said:
There are two types of violence, both physical and moral.
They are both dangerous.
Last week, a student was killed / stabbed by another classmate with a knife.
He died.
Advice:
- You should avoid violence
- You ought to be indifferent
- You should flee
- You had better warn the police
- You should talk instead of insulting people
Then we finished correcting the worksheet that you had to complete about "assignments".
Here are the correction of the exercises and the translations of the words in bold letters:
"to be written by Wafa"
HW: Faire le repérage au surligneur dans le texte donné pour les informations habituelles (who, where, when, what, how, why, ...). Il faudra ensuite créer à partir de ce texte un exercice de
compréhension pour une classe de 2nde.

Hey,
today we first warmed up about the trips that you had made abroad. Here is what we said:
Have you ever been to Australia ?
Have you ever been to England ?
- I have never been to Australia but I would like to live there.
It seems beautiful and I would like to see kangaroos in the wild.
- I have already been to England. I remember it was about 4 years ago for a school
exchange / partnership.
Then we started a new lesson about Harry Potter.
You had to listen to the very beginning of this video and spot out the missing words that were "Harry Potter".
Here is what we wrote in the lesson copy books about this document:
The document deals with / is about Harry Potter and J-K Rowling. J K R is the writer of this best-seller. It is a
publishing success.
Millions of books have been published all over / throughout the world.
Since 1997, more than 135 million copies have been sold in 48 different languages.
Only the bible has more translations. Every 30 seconds someone somewhere in the world begins a Harry Potter story.
Règle d'utilisation des nombres en anglais:
Hundreds of...
Thousands of ...
Millions of ...
Billions of ...
BUT:
3 million
4 million
Then I gave you a text without any punctuation and you had to replace it while listening. Here is the script so that you can correct it:

Finally we studied a quick grammar point on the present perfect. Here is what we said:
Les compléments du present perfect et ses valeurs:
For 13 years old ... : Cela fait ...
Since the 1st book came out ... : Depuis ...
Since + cpmt (= date, point de depart)
For + cpmt (= durée). On peut traduire ce complément par "cela Fait..."
Notion/valeur : bilan
HW: complete the vocabulary exercise on the worksheet I gave you.

Hey,
today we first warmed up about the time you spend on the Internet and here is what we said:
I spend an / one hour a day on the Internet. But I spend more time on
Wednesdays and on week-ends. I usually
log on to Facebook and to my msn account for 30 minutes a week.
Then we continued working on global warming and on the text. Here is the vocabulary that you had to translate:
- végétalien : vegan
- troupeau : livestock
- faire pousser des récoltes de fourrage : grow feed crops
- la quantité : quantity / amount
- restaurant fast-food : fast-food outlet
- bétail : cattle
- à peu près : roughly
Finally, I gave you a mind map where you had to spot the pieces of advice we had already given during the lesson. We eventually discussed the fact that it was difficult to "respect" all these
pieces of advice. You commented and you said why. We'll do a recap next time and we'll write the reasons why in the lesson copy book.
HW: you will have a test on Thursday Jan. 14th about this lesson on global warming and climate change.
You can download the mind map here again:

In module today, we first warmed up about the good resolutions of you and your parents... what should you / they do or stop doing this year...? And here is what we
wrote:
- I will spend more time studying
- I will try to increase my grades in English
- I will follow my good resolution
- I will be less absent-minded
A will of testament: un testament, les dernières volontés.
On comprend bien ici a valeur de WILL qui non seulement exprime le futur mais également la volonté, l'implication du sujet dans la réalisation de
l'action.
Then we moved on speaking about my X-mas and you had to ask questions in the past. Here are some of the questions you asked:
"I spent X-mas alone with my cat"
- What happened?
- Why were you with your car on X-mas day?
- What activities did you do with you cat?
- Where did you celebrate X-mas?
- You're kidding, aren't you?
Finally, we began studying a new document: an extract from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. There are some techniques you need to learn to understand a text.
1- Identify the characters (actually present and only mentionned).
2- Ask yourself and highlight time / place / behaviour... indicators.
3- Know the basic assignment verbs (e.g. "translate", "select", "sum up", ...)
Here is the answer for the first two questions on characters, place, and time:
"to be written by Wafa"
HW: you need to complete the worksheet (Questions 2 to 4) and translate the words in bold letters.
You may download the document again here:

Hey,
today we continued our lesson on global warming but we first did a little warm up.
You had to react about this sentence:
"My mother turned 92 years old on Christmas day and my grand-mother is 150!"
It's impossible!
It can't be!
It can't be true!
You must be lying!
Are you kidding ?
Are you pulling our leg / my leg ?
Are you teasing us / me ?
Question tags (demande de confirmation):
You're kidding, aren't you ?
You're pulling our legs, aren't you ?
You're teasing us, aren't you ?
You're lying, aren't you ?
Then we continued with pieces of advice you could give people about pollution. Here is what we wrote:
5 pieces of advice to protect the environnement :
- You should use you bicycle for a short distance
- Our parents had better buy electric cars
- We ought to use public transports
- We shouldn't use 4x4s (four by fours)
- We should gather rain water
Finally, I gave you a short text and we first read it, analysed the vocabulary and commented on it, giving advice.
Here is the translation of difficult words:
Vocabulary of the 1st paragraph:
- A chaque fois que... : whenever...
- Le micro-onde : microwave
- Gaz à effet de serre : greenhouse gases
- La combustion : burning
- Les appareils (électro-ménagers) : appliances
- Par exemple : e.g. (abréviation) - For example / For instance
- Cela en vaut le prix : It is worth the investment
You can download a copy of the text here:

HW: you need to read the end of the text and make as many pieces of advice as possible thanks to the information you understand (at least FIVE)
NB: attention, le mot "advice" est un indénombrable. Pour pouvoir dire "un conseil", il absolument mettre "a piece
of ..." devant "advice". (deux conseils = two pieces of
advice)

Today,
we really began our new sequence on global warming by studying an audio document about 4x4s.
You can listen to it again down here:
Here is what we said about it:
"to be written by Jérémy L."
Remember:
-> pour intensifier, il y a plusieurs procédés. Quels sont-ils ?
"to be written by Jérémy L."
-> pour exprimer l'opinion, plusieurs structures sont disponibles:
"to be written by Jérémy L."
-> pour faire une transition et présenter le point de vue opposé, un "link word" est à connaître:
"to be written by Jérémy L."
HW: For Thursday, you need to make 5 sentences (5 pieces of advice) about global warming and our behaviours. Use the following prompts:
... should / shouldn't + V ...
... had better / had better not + V ...
... ought to / ought not to + V ...

Today we worked on a new document in pairs. You had to ask questions to your partner to inquire about a superhero and get information from him/her.
You can download your two worksheets here:
Worksheet A
Worksheet B
You will need this information for the test. So make sure you know the stories by heart.
Take care,
