http://www.dazeland.com/images/Harry_Potter.jpgHey,

today you first took your irregular verbs test and after a recap of what we had said last time, we continued the lesson with a new very short text. Here is what we said about it:

- The text is an extract from Harry Potter.

- It's about / It deals with Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall who are walking and talking together in the street. They are talking about Harry Potter and his new family (his aunt, his uncle and his cousin). The scene probably takes place at night or in the end of the afternoon.

Methodology:

Who -> characters
Where -> place
When -> time
What -> events
How -> feelings

HW: for next time, finish completing exercise #1 from your worksheet + for after the vacation, you will need to have learnt all the irregular verbs and classify them into 2 charts (1- according to their different forms; 2- according to their meanings into several lexical fields).

Files: you can download the worksheet here again. (yet to be uploaded)

Hey,

today we first warmed up with the biography of Barbie, the famous doll. You can watch it below:

Here is what we said about it:

The document is about the story of Barbie since its creation.

It deals with the love she used to have with Ken, her perfect husband.

However, the perfect couple split up / broke up in 2007.

Barbie ditched / dumped Ken on Valentine's Day.

-> "Shame on you Barbie!"

-> "You're heartless Barbie!"

-> "What a bitch*** / whore*** / slut*** !!!!!"

Then we continued the lesson with the correction of your homework:

War-related words:

fighter / bomber -> (to) bomb

(to) kill / (to) destroy -> destruction ... terror / fire / flames

The Luft Waffe

invasion

attack / assault / incident

shelter

warfare (l'art de la guerre)

weapon / arsenal -> a gun, a bomb, ...

a bombing = un bombardement

(to) bomb / (to) bombard / (to) blast

air raid

(to) flee = to go away from the war

a tactical shift = a change of tactics

(to) subdue = to make someone capitulate

R.A.F

(to) take up arms (intro)

l. 19 : he's lost a leg

l. 22 : air raid

l. 23 : shelter

l. 23 : warning

l. 34 : pain

l. 45 : death

l. 30 : the darkness (connotation of something bad).

Additional vocabulary:

aquamarine = a type of precious stone (ex: diamond)

Then we continued the lesson with the reading of our new text and here is what we said about it:

If I were in Stella's shoes, ...

... I would break up with Philip because I would want to be honest.

... I would continue to cheat on Philip because if he died, I would not be single.

...  I wouldn't know what to do; I would feel torn apart.

...  I would feel pity for Philip because he's lost a leg so I would stay with him.

Stella has to make a choice. She has to face a dilemma / a difficult situation / an ordeal.

  Her possible choices:

- break up with P.

- break up with J.

- break up with both

- continue to cheat on P.

- fall in love with Joe's father

- commit suicide out of despair.

http://www.freewebs.com/theoldwesternmuseum/Slavery.jpgHey,

today we first did a quick recap of what was to be noted down as far as the 5 senses were concerned. Here is what we said:

ANALYSIS OF STRANGE FRUIT:

1. the sounds
2. historial context
3. interpretation of words (metaphors)
4. the contrasts
5. the 5 senses

Black bodies swinging in the Southern breeze is like an oxymoron because the corpses are in contrast with the southern breeze (a gentle wind).

Other examples:

The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Recap -> The 5 senses (related words):

Touch: flesh – to pluck – breeze (+) - wind (-) - rain
Smell: smell (-) – scent (+) – fresh (+) - magnolia (+) – burning (-) – (to) rot (-) – blood (-)
Taste: sweet (+) - fruit (+) – twisted mouth – bitter (-)
Sight: blood (-) – sun (+) – bulging eyes (-) – twisted mounth (-) hanging (-) – swinging (+)
Hearing: crows – pluck – suck – wind

Hearing: it sounds...
Sight: it looks...
Taste: it tastes...
Smell: it smells...
Touch: it feels...

Utilisation:

S...........+ adj -> "it smells horrible."
S.................+like + N -> "it sounds like the sound of the crows."
S..................+ as if + sentence -> "it feels as if we were present."

Analysis of the 5 senses:

In the poem B. Holiday appeals to our senses.
The lyrics convey a macabre / gruesome / sickening atmosphere.
When we read the poem, it feels as if we were seeing / witnessing the scene.
It looks horrible. It smells like death / like rotten corpses.
It tastes disgusting.
It sounds as if the crows were plucking the bulging eyes of the dead bodies.
And it feels as if we were witnessing a crime.

Opinion and personal feeling:
Intense emotions / contrasted feelings

Then we continued the lesson with a new text entitled "Southern Trees". Here are the first elements of what you said:

The text is an extract from Billy Holiday's autobiography entitled Lady sings the Blues and published in 1956. (i.e., before the end of segregation)

Autobiography: it’s a first person narrative, where the author, the narrator and the subject are the same.

≠ It’s a 3rd person narrative.

HW: get prepared for a vocabulary test + don't forget to prepare your poem project + oral commentary of the poem "Strange Fruit" (5 to 10 minutes' presentation).

http://www.gstatic.com/hostedimg/6a57950254f314e2_landingHey,

today we first talked about the document again but you had a lot of troubles performing a good recap... So we had to listen to the document again so that you could remember more things... Here is what we said in the lesson:

The document is about the success of Harry Potter. It has been a craze since 1997, when the book was 1st published.
More than 135 million copies have been sold and it has been translated in 48 languages. It's the biggest publishing success the world has ever seen. It's as popular and famous as the Bible. Every 30 seconds, someone somewhere in the world begins a Harry story. In the future, maybe there will be a Harry Potter Day. For J.K Rowling, it's a dream come true. She can't believe it.

Then we continued talking about grammar. Here is what we said:

2 hundred
15 thousand
25 million
136 billion
237 trillion

But -> Hundreds of / Thousands of / Millions of ...

HW: for next time, you need to prepare the role play and answer the questions about vocabulary at the end of your worksheet.

Files: download the worksheet here again.

Hey,

today as there wasn't a lot of people in class, we still talked about love but with a different point of view... Barbie's point of view actually... Here is the document that you studied:

Here is what we said about the history of Barbie and what the doll represents:

Barbie doll: Her biography

Barbie represents a role model for a lot of young girls. She is the symbol for the perfect woman who is gorgeous and always successful in both her career and private life. Of course, she confirms many stereotypes imposed on by society.
Many girls want to look like her. They have hundreds of dolls and thousands of accessories (shoes, cars, dream houses, ...).
Barbie was first created in March 1959 after Barbara Millicent Roberts,
the daughter of the creator. In 1961, she married Ken to create the perfect family.
However, in 2004 she got divorced / split / ditched her lover and she is now single. In 2009, it was her 50th birthday and she still embodies perfection.

By the way, Nadia (our Barbie expert ), you were right about the name... and I was wrong... you ARE definitely the BARBIE specialist

I hope that those who went to the play have enjoyed it. You'll have to tell me next time. See you soon.

Mr Hattais.

Hey,

today we first spoke about how Barbie dolls were the symbols of how society shapes our values. Here is what we said:

Barbie is beautiful. She is the symbol for the perfect woman. She is gorgeous. That's why young girls identify to her. It's their role model. But this is imposed on by a society. Girls and Boys don't have the same tastes because they are taught by society not to have the same tastes.

Then we continued talking about the poem Strange Fruit. Here are the main points of the commentary that you will have to write:

The sounds ; the historical context ; the interpretation of words (metaphors) ; the contrasts (natural VS unnatural) and the five senses.

HW: get prepared for a vocabulary test + for the reading of the poem with a good accent (pronunciation and stress) and emotions.
