today we read the text about the experiment in a school with shorter holidays. Here is the information that we took out identifying arguments for (in favour of) and against long holidays:

Vocabulary

Staggered = disturbed = changed

Bored = Un sentiment ressenti (ennuyé)

Boring = Un sentiment provoqué (ennuyant)

a rise = an increase = une augmentation

under pressure = under stress

bored senseless = extremely bored

entertainment = fête, divertissement, amusement

havoc = chaos

Drawbacks and Advantages

Drawbacks

Advantages

- Shorter holidays are positive for GW college.

- there is a 88% rise in positive evaluations

- There are more students who succeed at the exam than before.

- The children aren't concentrated when there is a long holiday.

- They forget their lessons.

- There is costly childcare for parents who work during the holidays.

- The children get bored senseless and vandalism increases.

- It's havoc to have staggered holidays.

- Long holidays mean relaxation.

- They are a sacred island of family time.

- When you have long holidays, you can relax, and stop being under pressure.

- When you have long holidays, you have more spare time for entertainment.

Finally, I gave you a methodology worksheet entitled "Link Words". I will explain you what to do with it next time.

Hi guys,

today we dedicated the first part of the class to speaking about Troy Davis's case. You can watch a report about it below:

Here is what we said about it:
TROY DAVIS - The controversy
He was a black man sentenced / condemned / convicted to death about 20 years ago for the murder of a white policeman. He was executed yesterday in Georgia in spite of the fact that he had claimed his innocence for 20 years. There has been a controversy over this case led by protesters, charities and lawyers. They said that he was condemned because justice needed to find a culprit / scape-goat.

Then we continued correcting the translation from last year's exam. Here is the translation we suggested:
"to be written by Maheen"

Hi guys,

today we first did a quick warm up about Troy Davis's case. You can watch a report about it below:

Here is what we said about this case:

This man was executed yesterday night in the USA. He had been condemned because he had committed a crime.

Some witnesses had said that they had witnessed him do it. Many people disagreed with this execution because some witnesses said that they had lied during their testimony. There was only little evidence now.

NB: Past Perfect = bouleversement chronologique.

Vocabulary

Some ≠ Many
To witness = to see a crime
To testify = to tell about a crime -> a testimony.
a piece of evidence = a proof

Then we continued our lesson with the correction of your homework that many hadn't made correctly.

Words indicating anger in Ellman's speech: "disgusting", "revolting", "unacceptable"

Finally, we debated over summer holidays to see if they were too long or too short. Here is the list of drawbacks that we made against long summer holidays:

"to be written by Pascal"

Hi guys,

today we first recapped the lesson about the text with Amélie who did a pretty good job on the whole.

Then we watched a report about Ruth Simmons. You can watch it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

This afro-American woman has had the will power / energy to work herself out of poverty. She comes from a dirt poor family where her mother was just a maid and her father a sheer cropper. She has succeeded in climbing up the social ladder and become president of an Ivy League College, Brown University in Rhode Island. She found her motivation in the death of her mother. She wanted her family to be proud of her.

Contrary to Ruth Simmons, our character felt betrayed and was under too much pressure; that’s why he dropped out of college.

Finally we started to learn some translation techniques and help for this type of exercise. We'll continue tomorrow.

Hey,

today we first warmed up with the "I love food" song  and we listened to the very beginning of the movie again.

Here is what we said about it:

The director's critism:

The movie opens with a scene where children are taught a song; it goes: " I like food, you like food ...." It's like a slogan with choreography.
The children are taught to like and to go to fast food restaurants.
The director exaggerates / emphasizes the fact that everything is bigger in America.
He makes a long list: America has the biggest cars, the biggest companies, ... and the fattest people.
His final comment: " Congratulations!" is ironic
Being obese is not healthy of course and shouldn't be encouraged.
However we must be careful with stereotypes and clichés.
For instance, in France we also have a growing obesity problem.
Grammar:
For example: healthy -> the healthiest...
- lorsque l'on a plus de deux syllabes on utilise "the most" avant l'adjectif qui reste inchangé. For example: obese -> the most obese...
-> the least + adj...

Finally, we continued talking about the text we had begun on Monday about Bill and his wife. Here is the info that came out:

Bill is fond of Junk food
He comes from America
His wife hates Junk food
She likes healthy food
She comes from England
Bill used to live in the US before he went to England and met his wife. He spent 20 years in England before going back to the US.

Hi guys,

today we first checked your pronunciation of some important vocabulary words from the lesson such as "chocolate", "hamburgers", "broccoli", ... and then we moved on with trying to understand the very beginning of the movie "Super Size Me".

You can watch the extract (and more) again below:

Here is what we said about the document:

Super Size me: The opening of the movie

The director intends to draw a portrait of America and explain why people are getting fatter and fatter/ more and more obese .
He compares the situation today and in the past, trying to find explanations for the consequences on teenagers' health.
He mentions the case of two girls who decided to sue / file a lawsuit against /   attack the Golden Arches / Mc Donald's: they blame the company for being overweight / morbidly fat.

See you then!

http://calendar.exeter.edu/displaymedia.aspx?whatToDo=picture&id=271Hi guys,

today after making a quick recap of what we had said about the text so far, we corrected the questions from last year's exam. We could see how the analysis we had done previously was VERY useful since nearly all the elements to answer the questions were on the board.

Here is what we said in the end:

"to be written by Maheen"

http://www.offthemarkcartoons.com/cartoons/2005-06-21.gifHi guys,

after talking to you about the possible trip to NYC this year, we studied a new document dealing with school. But it was a rather strange type of document, wasn't it? You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

The strange voice mail/answering machine:

The document is a recording from a school where the staff have become crazy. The message invites parents to lie about why their child is absent, make excuses about the homework, complain about the
teachers, blame administration for school lunches, reproach them with poor bus transportation, or to swear at staff members.

How to complain in English:
(to) complain about ... + V-ing
(to) blame ... for ...
(to) reproach ... with ...
(to) accuse ... of ...

Ex: Students always complain about eating no vegetables at the cafeteria.

Hi guys,

today one of the students made a quick presentation of last time's cartoon. Her performance was not as good as it could have been because she was not prepared enough to talk about it. We then had to concentrate on how to improve things for next time.

Finally we studied an audio document about school. You can listen to it again below:

Here is what we said about it:

The School’s answering machine

I.  The document is a recording of a school’s voicemail but it is not normal. There is a gap between a regular message and this recording.

The author intends to be humorous and aims at denouncing school problems and the attitude of some parents.

The message makes a list of different options that the parents can select if:

-         They want to lie about why their children are absent.

-         They want to make excuses about why they didn’t do their homework.

-        .. to complain about administration.

-        .. to swear at staff members.

-         They want teachers to raise their child

-         ..... to slap or hit someone.

Vocabulary:

A recording of = Un enregistrement de

A gap = a discrepancy = a difference

It intends to…+ BV = It aims at…+ ING = verbes pour exprimer la notion de but

To lie = mentir

Homework = devoir

To complain about = se plaindre

To swear at = jurer / insulter

To slap = gifler

Staff members = employés, membres du personnel

To raise = éduquer

Voicemail = answering machine = messagerie vocale

Phonetics:

Recording / Slap / Swear / Regular / Raise / lie / denounce / administration

http://www.merseycare.nhs.uk/Library/What_we_do/Corporate_Services/Catering/eatwellplatelarge.jpgHey guys,

today we made a quick recap of what we had said about the definition for junk food and we completed it. Here is what we said:

Eating too much junk food may lead to health problems such as:

- diabetes
- high blood pressure
- difficult pregnancy
- cholesterol
You should cut down on eating junk food and you ought to have a balanced diet.

Then we read the extract from "Notes from a big Country" entitled "Junk Food Heaven" and you had to find out whether the ingredients and food items mentionned in the text were healthy or unhealthy and discuss why.

Here is the chart we drew and the "remember" section:

Healthy
Ryvita (a special type of Swedish brown bread)
muesli
Milk (watch out! it depends if it is skimmed / low-fat or not )
broccoli
melons
mushrooms
Unhealthy
pizza
bacon
cheese
cookies
pancakes
cereals
peanut butter crunch
chocolate

Remember: If an ingredient is high in fat, sugar or starch and low in nutrients (proteins, calcium, vitamins,...), it is unhealthy.

http://danamccauley.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/golden20syrup1.jpgHi guys,

today we corrected your homework and we discussed the notion of junk food to really determine what it was. In the end we concluded that there were 3 types of junk food items and we made a short list according to the main ingredients:

Junk food items are either...

High in sugar:
cookies
maple syrup
peanut butter
candy
golden syrup
chocolate
biscuits
... or ...
High in fat:
hamburgers
peanuts
crisps / ! chips / French fries
cream
golden syrup
nuggets
bacon
... or ...

High in starch:
hot dogs
hamburgers
biscuits
Definition:
A junk food item is a type of food which is unhealthy because it's either high in sugar, fat or starch.
It means we should limit / cut down on our consumption of junk food.
Either.....or..... = options

We also did some pronunciation recap and we reviewed some important rules that help make a difference.

Documents:

- Download a copy of the text here (p.1 and p. 2)

http://www.clker.com/cliparts/5/b/2/e/1237099306261031288Steren_Warning.svg.med.pngHi guys,

today we talked about road safety a little bit and I tested you to know if you were going to be careful drivers. I presented you a set of road signs and you had to determine their meanings and if they existed in France or not.

Here is what we said about the shapes and the meanings of these road signs:

The road signs: a universal language

http://haggisthesheep.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/triangle.pngThe triangle shape means warning.

For instance, it means that you have to give way at the next crossing.

It means that there is a possible danger (you should watch out for cattle or wild animals [deers] or a sharp bend in the road).

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Circle_-_black_simple.svg/500px-Circle_-_black_simple.svg.png

= the circle shape means something is mandatory. It’s an obligation.

http://fixbyproximity.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/square.png

= the square shape means it’s a piece of information (NB: jamais de "s" à information qui est non-comptable = 2 pieces of information).

Phonology (accent tonique et réalisation du schwa [ə]):

'Culture ; cui'sine ; 'leisure ; enter'tainement ; 'gorgeous ; 'problem ; dis'crepency

Then we continued talking about this document:

Back-to-school---cartoon.JPG

We noted the discrepancy / difference between reality and the cartoon and it produces humour. We also worked about methodology and reviewed some important vocabulary words about attitudes (cf. over-exited, (to) stomp, ...).

today we welcomed the students who were not present on Monday and we had a little chat about dream holidays.

According to what you said, they had to select their favorite destination and explain their choice.

Here is what we said in the end:

My dream trip:

If I had money, I would like to go to New York City because I think it’s the most beautiful city in the world. I love the skyline.

Nevertheless it is not the cheapest destination. If you don’t have a lot of money, you ought to stay in France. For instance, I would like to go Saint Jean de Luz because the beaches are gorgeous.

Rappel de grammaire:

- Pour exprimer le souhait, on peut utiliser les formes verbales suivantes: « would like to.../ want(s) to… »

ought to... »

- The most + adj long --- the adj court-est... / The least .. (le plus... / le moins...)

Then we finished the class by talking about how you liked or disliked school and how you felt when you came to class. We started to analyse parts of a cartoon but we didn't have time to say much; only to comment on the bizarre shape of the road sign. We'll continue tomorrow.

http://www.tips-for-camping.com/images/HL_00113_Route66.jpgHey guys,

today we talked about the text again and we corrected your homework about the famous Ivy League Colleges.

Here is what we said about the places in the text and the influence they have on the main character:

There are lots of references to when the character wants to / would like to / wishes to / aspires to go and where from he wants to flee / escape. He comes from a poor Midwestern family / environment / background.

He is fed up with being treated like a hillbilly / redneck. He decides to go Florida and leave his Ivy League College of New Hampshire (Dartmouth). From Saint Petersburg, Florida, he can see the capital city of Cuba, La Havana, and dreams of revolution (a symbol for change his life).

Additional Vocabulary:

- whiz*: “a whiz kid” - brilliant, smart, clever …

- a reward / to reward / to be rewarded with

- a scholarship / a grant (money you get from the state to access higher education)

- tuition fees (price for school)

Cultural fact: Interstates Routes

- Even numbers (0/2/4/6/8) go from East to West

- Odd numbers (1/3/5/7/9) go from North to South

You can have a new peak at the map here:

http://media.appappeal.com/articles/ivy-league-students-should-use-these-7-web-apps/ivy_league_locations.png

Will you be able to place all these names on a blank map again + the other places we talked about like St Petersburg or else...? I advise you to get ready for some kind of quiz soon...

http://www.mylimitlesssuccess.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/ivy-league.pngHi guys,

today after talking bad (and good...) about the person who was absent, we continued the class with the information you had to locate in your texts (who, where, when).

You did a pretty good job talking and here is what we said as a comment:

The text is a first person narrative. It may be an autobiography.

The main character talks about his past in a flash-back. He relates the events that happened to him after highschool when he went to a very famous college and stopped / dropped out after nine weeks only because he was annoyed by other kids.

He comes from a poor family with problems. His father (a brute) left his mother / broke up with / cheated on her when he and his siblings were children.

He went to Florida to get a job and he got married to escape his previous life. He felt under pressure / depressed / abandoned / distraught.

New Hampshire, ... and of course Paris! because yes, Paris exists in the USA too... :)
