http://ddata.over-blog.com/3/18/86/31/Tale/india/dabbawala_authentic_india.jpgHey guys,

today we first finished our sequence about shopping with the end of the song "Price Tag" that you finally succeeded in singing alright. Here are the comments we made about the song:

"to be written by ..."

Then we continued the lesson without Holly because she was sick but we did talk about slavery and modern slavery in particular. Here is what we said about the document we watched about Bridal Slaves:

India, a land of contrasts (slavery and a blooming economy)

The document is a report about slaves in India. It deals with bride trafficking, a modern type of slavery.  A woman is sold to a man by her parents. She is then the slave of her husband, who can make her work around the house (for the house chores and for sex) and outside the house for agriculture.

Slavery is now illegal in every country in the world. However, it is alive, striving and bigger than ever (in India for instance).

A slave: is a person who works for no money and without his/her consent. They are not free to leave. Moreover, there is always violence.

Finally, you had to guess what the mystery object was and you have made many assumptions so far. Here is the list of possibilities you put forward:

"to be written by ..."

The mystery object, the picture:

http://videokeman.com/image/pics/JessieJsongPics1cDxX94Ll4IhEpM.jpgHey guys,

today we worked on the song "Price Tag" by Jessie J. and B.o.B.

We first did a little bit of phonetics to be able to sing it correctly and we started the analysis.

The two proverbs that are represented in the video are:

"Money talks" and "Money doesn't grow on trees"

-> However in the video, money does grow on trees but money doesn't talk, i.e. it doesn't rule the world. To be fulfilled, the singer doesn't need money, she needs to sing and dance.

We talke about the ironic criticism that the singer elaborates with her song and started filling in the lyrics. We'll finish this next time.

Watch the video clip again here:

HW:

Document:

- Téléchargez la fiche d'activités ici.

Thanks to Mrs Kiffer who originally created the activity.

Hi guys,

today two of you came up to the front of the class to give out their presentations about this visual document:

http://transitionfarnham.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/buy-nothing-day-20062.jpg

You can send me YOUR personal oral presentation by email and I will help you correct it.

Then in the 2nd part of the hour, we had class with Holly who taught you some bits about slavery and a slave auction. You had to impersonify slaves, slave owners and buyers at a slave market.

Here are important vocabulary words:

"to be written by ..."

HW:

Hey guys,

today we first worked on the following video about the craze "Black Friday" can be in the US. You can watch the document again below:

Here is what we have begun to say about it:

I : The document is a news report from the BBC. It takes place in the US and more precisely in Los Angeles, California during the Christmas season in November (just after Thanksgiving). It deals with / it is about the problems because of Black Friday in the USA.

D : The document deals with 2 facts that happened in crowded stores.

1st :in Los Angeles (California)

A woman used pepper spray to go faster to an Xbox console which was at a good price. 20 people got injured / hurt.

2nd : There was another act of violence in Texas or North Carolina. A shot was fired but nobody got killed.

Vocabulary :

- to cut prices

- low prices

- a good bargain / deal

- the sales

- a promotion

- a shop (UK) / a store (US)

A - H - O + Branch Out will be finished when the sequence is over and you know more things about Shopping (Buy Nothing Day), Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and over-consumption in general.

Then we continued the class during the 2nd hour with Holly. You first had to talk about the "famine video" we had worked on last Friday. You did a pretty good job and your trying to explain the differences between poor and rich countries was often interesting.

Finally, we had you study a fragment of a picture (one for each group) and you had to:

- imagine what was around the picture -> who, where, when, what ...

- give it a title

The body / boy in the field:

-> w/ his family - they are too exhausted to walk

Lost African men: (in the middle)

3 people

on a boat

The wild man:

Many other slaves / in the 19th century

no clothes

Title unknown for the moment:

no natural ressources

slaves — look scared

__ exhausted

- have a break next to a tree

As we haven't finished discussing about it, we'll continue next time (on Tuesday).

HW:

Hey guys,

http://www.samsakamo.com/img/argument.jpg

today we worked on how to improve your essays and above all, how to organize your ideas in a coherent way and really answer the question.

"Do you think that some internet services or websites should be banned / outlawed / forbidden?" (200 words)

Here is the introduction we made:

INTRO:

Present the topic: The internet is a useful tool and many people use it. You can access many sites with a lot of information.

Present the question:  However in some countries where there are dictatorships some internet websites are banned. During the "Arab Spring" many sites were shut down because of the fear of free speech and rebellion.

What are the dangers and is it a good thing to outlaw some websites?

Present the organisation: First we will see why some websites should be restricted and then why some services should be completely forbidden.

DVPT: ...

CCL: ...

VOCABULARY :

                          (to) affect children's mental health

(to) restrict access for underage children

                          a dictator -> a dictatorship

(to) control what people do/think and how they behave

(to) tell about the reality of their lives

(to) protest against the political regime

                          a tool = un outil

HW:

Hey guys,

today you first took a comprehension test about a weird internet service called "rentafriend.com" ... We'll see what you thought about it next time.

Then, during the second part of the lesson, you had to talk about the content and the goals of these two charity ad campaign against famine in Africa. You can watch them again below:

One.org

Oxfam

We'll make a recap about your ideas next time.

Hey guys,

today we first listened to Nathalie's presentation of the spoof ad which was very good on the whole (next time, you'll need to speak only from notes and not read them too much).

Then we continued the lesson with a deeper analysis of what the crisis in Africa was like at the moment thanks to this video report:

Here is what we said about it:

Tuesday,november 4th

The document is a news report / news flash. It was published by Reuters in the UK.

It deals with famine in the horn of Africa. It takes place now in Kenya even if it's not a recent problem. It's a long-lasting issue but there is a crisis now.

It deals with / It shows / It features the British charity «Save the children» who is trying to help poor black children in their clinics.

Ideas / Problems:

  • dead animals -> ...

  • no food -> malnourished children

  • no clean water / not enough clean water -> ...

  • no medicine -> diseases

  • no money -> ...

HW:

Hey guys,

I got annoyed today when both Romain and Morgane behaved really badly. This is not the attitude you could expect from senior students whom you treat like grown-ups but whose attitude resembles more that of a 6-year-old... Do this again and you'll suffer much worse consequences than you can possibly imagine... This is a friendly WARNING still, but I won't be patient with you anymore!

However, today we succeeded in studying three main documents. First, we talked about this video:

Here is what we said about it:

Warm up: Iphone 5 - The concept

The document introduces 3 news possible options / features for Iphone 5

1. It's thinner than ever before. The problem is that it will not reassure the customer.
It could be easy to break.
2.  keyboard (projection) : The projected keyboard alrealdy exists for computers in the USA
according to Shay.
3. Hologrammes / holographic pictures and videos : the holographic projection looks fake / incredible / impossible / unbelievable but if it were true it would be great!

Then we continued the lesson with the study of two texts in groups. You had to exchange information when you were done trying to understand them. Here is what we said about the first text:

Fake or real products / services?

The document is about a product which produces energy with sun power: a solar panel. The inventor is teenager from a village in Nepal; he invented this discovery in 2009.
His invention uses human hair to conduct electricity; so / consequently it only costs £23.
It's a real product since the article was published in the Daily Mail, a reliable / serious British newspaper.

a reliable / serious / trustworthy newspaper = a broadsheet # a tabloid

"I can't believe what I am reading and yet it's true"    ---   unreal # true

Here is what we wrote about the 2nd text (notes only):

"to be written by Sitti"

Finally, we concluded with the opinion of the blogger about the fake excuses website. Here are the important words that indicate he/she does not really have a positive opinion about it:

"to be written by Sitti"

HW:

Do you think some internet services or websites should be banned / outlawed / fordidden?" (indiquez le nombre de mots réellement produits)

Hey guys,

today we continued our analysis of the ad about the Ipad respecting the IDAHO method. Here is what we wrote in our copy books:

I : The document is an ad about Ipad2. The source is not mentioned but we can imagine that it was published on the internet or in the street on billboards (in the metro, at bus stops...).
It was released before March 11 2011 since it is the date when the product was launched.
D : The document can be divided into 3 parts:
The logo (and brand name) at the top, the catch phrase below the logo and finally the picture of the product at the bottom.

1. the logo: it represents the word Ipad2, in bold letters. The grey and black letters give an impression of reflection. The logo is glistening.
2. The catchphrase: it gives information about the product. The catchphrase reads "..."
It gives the release date, the price and some characteristics of the product.
3. The picture of the product: someone (probably the hand of a man) is laying/setting the product on a white table (the background is also pure white). The product is presented in profile. You can see the thickness and some icons for the applications.
Faire des suppositions:

we can imagine
            suppose
            assume
            guess
Vocabulary

peaceful
a billboard = a board on which there is a poster
to launch / release a product
thickness # thinness

HW
