French Panel moves cautiously on veil. (The New York Times, January 26, 2010)
Recently a French panel of legislators vote to ban interdiction.
Ban a full facial veil on public place such as public hospitals, government offices.
For Mr SARKOZY, the veils runs counter to women dignity.
Some women are wearing a headscarf voluntary as an expression of their faith. The French majority is in favor of a ban on the veil.

Arguments For |
Arguments Against |
|
Showing our religious faith runs counter to our principal secularism. We must respect secularism We must be easily identified in public places |
- It is a violation of our freedom of speech |
This "law" shows that French people consider this as a threat.
It's a political tactic to frighten people.
Some people relate these women to terrorism.
In England : In schools they used to have a Christmas service, not anymore. They have religious studies: Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Sikhism.
Wearing religious garments is allowed.
Nursery rhymes have been changed. They obliterated any lyrics that could be considered as signs of racism.

Lesson of Tuesday, January 26th TS2P GROUP 1
Thanks to Lucie for her notes
Today we worked on the text you had to prepare for today:
Hard up shoppers abandon organic and fair trade goods
Michael did an oral account of the text. Very good
Then we talked about some notions:
Fair trade: A concept invented in order to help producers and farmers. Instead of buying big brand products we can buy fair trade goods
Big producers control the market because their products are sold at lower prices thanks to the scale economy. The more we produce the cheaper the products
An organic product: A natural product grown or made without chemicals ie without pesticides or fertilizers
GMO= Genetically-modified organisms
Arguments FOR and AGAINST organic and fair trade goods

Camille’s current issue
From the Figaro, December 2009
In China, pollution kills 300,000 persons a year.
Chinese growth is done at the price of massive pollution.
Air pollution causes public health problems. The rate of sulfur dioxide exceeds the European standards. Today, in China pollution provokes the premature deaths of 300,000 persons a year. Coal is used in cooking and heating houses.
In eight years the quality of waters of rivers has deteriorated. Although the water is polluted people still use it to irrigate their fields.
COCA COLA
WWF: Wildlife World Fund, NGO, they fight to preserve animal lives and nature= a conservationist organization.
C.C has pledged to: - reduce the water they use for their drinks.
- recycle the water they use in their factories
-replenish water in nature and with people
C.C and WWF are partners to conserve and preserve natural ressources.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: What does it involve?
The preservation of our natural ressources
HOW?
By reducing our consumption
By replacing what can be replaced (for example planting trees)
By using renewable energy such as solar power, wind power
Instead of fossil fuel (oil, gas, coal) we have to find a balance between the resources we use and the resources we produce.
It involves that all the peoples of the world can afford (ont les moyens de) to protect the environment =
It also involves economic growth: Countries have to become richer.

Today, we worked on a text: Hard up shoppers abandon organic and fair trade goods
Vocabulary
A new phenomenon
A new trend
To abandon: to give up + V + ing
The main idea : Ethical consumers give up purchasing organic and fair trade products.
Facts : The sales of ethical products have dropped. According to a poll the number of consumers ready to pay for ethical products has plunged.
Reasons : Because the consumers’ purchasing power has fallen because of the recession.
Branching out: Why do you think consumers buy organic and fair trade products?
People think organic products are healthier but it’s not all, it’s better for our earth.
For example for vegetables, producers don’t use pesticides so it’s more natural.
They think organic products are healthier and environmentally-friendly because they are grown without fertilizers and pesticides.
They are natural products.
Fair trade products : these products aim at helping small producers (from poor countries) who cannot compete against multinationals.
