Hey,
today we first did a little recap of what we had said about the text entitled "The Rolls Royce". Then we continued on speaking about it and more precisely about the
characters in the text and the opinions they had about Joe's father, Peter. Here is what we said about it:
"to be written by Romane"
We also explained some vocabulary expressions in the text. Here is what we said:
"to be written by Romane"
Finally, we began talking about "reported speech" but we didn't have time finish. We'll do that next time.
HW: you need to comment upon Emily's opinion about her husband.

Hey,
today we first started the class with a little "If game" and here is what we wrote in our lesson copy books about it:
"Speaking" : "If" Games :
IF + PRETERIT => WOULD + VERBE
• If I broke a vase
while babysitting I would pay for it or I would accuse the baby.
• If I
could become invisible, I would strike it rich because I would steal from people.
• If I could fly away
this instant, I would go to the USA.
• If it rained everyday
of my holiday, I would buy an umbrella and I would feel disappointed.
Then we continued the lesson with the study of a new text. You had to find who the characters were and what their characteristics were. Here is the chart that we
began drawing about them:
* * * * *
New Document : The
Rolls-Royce:
The characters:
Joe (I): The narrator, an adult / a grown-up; => He remembers his childhood, when his father was
about 50 (cf. "bits of white in his beard")
Peter (he): Joe's father, he wanted a car when the narrator was young, more precisely a Rolls-Royce. He's dead now.
Moral Portrait :
- Melancholy
- poetic
Physical appearence :
- brown eyes
- tall
- thin
- moustache
- beard
Emily (she): Joe's mother
Friends (they): friends of Peter's

Hey,
with Group 1, we continued speaking about uniforms and listing some arguments for and against:
- You can feel left out, like a pariah if your parents cannot afford to buy you expensive
clothes
- It's normal, it's a custom / habit
-> You are accustomed to wearing a uniform.
Vocabulary:
- mentally
tiring
- repetitive
- boring
- You can
get fed up with wearing a
uniform
With group 2, we spoke about an oral document dealing with illegal downloading:
The document deals with illegal downloading, i.e.when people download music from the Internet for free / without paying.
Lily Allen has threatened to quit the music industry if people continue to download
her music for free.
In London, with Pink Floyd and RadioHead, they have made a proposal to the government: if the police knows someone
downloads illegally, they will first send 2 letters of warning and then slow down
the hacker's Internet connection.
Voc:
(to) slow down = ralentir
(to) shut down = fermer
You can listen to the document again here:
Finally, those who wanted could read the song "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2 and get a grade for their oral presentation.

Sunday Bloody Sunday (the end):
Many words refer to the event which happened in
1972.

Hey,
today after taking your regular irregular verb test, we continued speaking about the gold rush and we nearly finished analysing the audio document. Here is what we
added about it:
Gold Rush => People, dates, facts, places
People came to San Francisco to find gold / to strike it
rich from the South, the North and the East, i.e. from everywhere.
It started in 1848 when a man, John Marshall, found a gold nugget in a river
near a mill called Sutter's Mill. The first people / gold diggers arrived slowly and
then, the gold fever really developed... :
- ... when the word / the news
spread that there was gold in rivers
- ... when rumor had it that there was gold in
rivers.
Then I gave you a worksheet to complete as a recap of the document. You may download it here:

HW: for next time, you need to write a definition of the phrase "gold rush" as we could read in an encyclopædia (80-100 words)
You can use some information from Wikipedia if you want to be more precise and get to know more about the gold rush. Click HERE
For next Tuesday, you will take an oral comprehension test about the gold rush. Get ready!

Hey,
today we first did a quick recap of what we had said about the picture with the Rolls Royce.
Then we moved on with a new document about Mark. You can listen to his conversation with a friend after he came back to England from the States:
Here is what we said about this document:
Audio Document: Gold Rush
The document deals with Mark, an Englishman who travelled to the USA and visited many monuments.
He went to Niagara Falls and the West Coast. He particularly liked California and more precisely,
San Francisco.
He has even found a gold
nugget. In the 19th century, gold diggers went to California to become rich / to strike it rich, between 1848 and
1850.
San Francisco's population increased (= went up) very fast; there were a lot of inhabitants. Consequently, violence also increased and the price of food (particularly water) went up.
The "Gold Fever" was brutal and violent. It was dangerous
and life was expensive.

Hey,
we first started the lesson by commenting on the picture entitled "Coexist" that you can see below.
Here is what we said about it:
The main religions in the Western world
† : the Catholic / Christian Cross.
☪ : the Muslim Crescent (Moon).
✡ : the Star of David (the Jewish symbol).
Picture analysis:
COEXIST
The document is a photo. It depicts a
concert stage ; There are spot lights and a little smoke like in a concert. The
atmosphere is gloomy because the main colours are red and black. It may symbolizes Hell.
The colour red stands for (= symbolizes) blood and the black represents darkness. It may recall the blood shed in a
civil war.
It may recall "Bloody Sunday" when many civilians died. They were shot by the British
police.
Then we continued the lesson listening to the song "Bloody Sunday" by U2. Here is what we said about it (sounds, voice, lyrics):
The Song: Sunday Bloody Sunday
=> At the beginning, the sounds of the
drums recall the sounds of gun shots. It's as if it were a machine gun.
The voice of the singer sounds gloomy. It's as if he were whining.

Hey,
today you first had a small test on irregular verbs. Then we moved on with the beginning of our new sequence. We first commented on this picture:
Here is what we said about it:
The Rolls Royce in the gilded / golden
cage
The document is a drawing. It represents a car in a gilded cage. There are 2 groups of people who are looking at
it on both sides of the cage.
The couple on the right looks rich. The man may
be a business man who is going to buy the car. He is carrying a briefcase with maybe a lot of cash in it.
On the contrary, on the left, a man
is standing alone. He looks sad and disappointed. His shoulders are slumped. He would like to buy this car but he can't afford it.
We also imagined what the character on the left could be saying. Here it reads:
He might be saying:
-> "Wow! This car is so beautiful! What a pity / too bad, I can't afford it"
->
"I wish I was / were rich"
->
"I wish I had a lot of money"
-> "I wish I
could afford this car"
Grammar:
HW: for next time, you need to be able to comment on this picture again, i.e. learn your lesson.
