Hey guys,

today we first worked on commenting on this video with Holly. I'm sure you thought it was dumbfounding... who wouldn't be surprised at seeing such a thing. But you finally admitted that it was probably not a good solution to power the torch of the Statue of Liberty even though you could see some advantages.

You can watch the video again below:

Then you continued talking about your personal sources of energy (the ones you designed and the ones you selected to answer in your essay). Here are some of the ideas that emerged from the discussion (my favourite is definitely the electricity produced by the cyclist who use the cycle-hire system...):

Quentin:

Design a machine that willtransform air pollution into electricity

PROs:

  • it will solve two problems at once = (to) kill two birds with one stone.

CONs:

  • it will take a long time of research and is probably not feasible.

Ornella:

Use hydroelectric power

PROs:

  • inexpensive over time even though it may cost a lot to build the installation (dam and turbines) at first

  • renewable

  • no green house gases emissions

Shanice / Kay:

Burn waste

PROs:

  • it will solve two problems at once (NY also has a recycling problem)

  • not green but renewable supply.

CONs:

  • might create air pollution

Harmonie:

“The Speaking Energy” = Install boxes with sound detectors in the street, offices and homes. Voices and sounds will produce energy.

PROs:

  • people speak a lot

  • renewable

  • created by people and for people

  • really inexpensive (apart from the cost of the equipment at the beginning)

  • would be possible to use on the street to have a constant supply

CONs:

  • it will take a long time of research and is probably not feasible.

Rémi:

Banana skins

Use a machine to produce energy out of banana peals. A turbine would be activated and produce electricity.

PROs: …. ?

CONs:

  • it will take a long time of research and is probably not feasible.

Maïlys (and others):

Use the cycle-hire system to produce electricity:

  • extract the energy from a generator connected to the bike

  • force all evil step mothers to pedal in a cellar

  • pay people to cycle

    OR

    Use tourists who want to go the statue; get them a free entrance for every 10 minutes of cycling for example

PROs:

  • energy is free and it encourages people to have a positive impact on the city

  • It’s a fun way to create electricity and will attract more tourists

  • It will help solve lots of problems including obesity if a campaign is created that would combine 3 aspects:

    - Reduce power consumption

    - Use renewable green energy

    - Make people more active

HW: pour jeudi, rendre l'argumentation complète (env. 250 mots) sur le sujet "20 years from now, how should the torch of the Statue of Liberty be powered?"

http://www.winthrop.edu/uploadedImages/news/Articles/Choreography-Showcase.jpgHey guys,

today we first warmed up with a little choreography to make sure everyone remembered the prepositions to locate something in a visual document. Here is the chart we finally drew to make sure you will not forget:

"to be written by Seda"

Then we continued the class talking about the first panel (cover page) of Spiderman. Here is what we said about it:

   PRL : present be + -ing vs present simple

                      BE+-ing
They are suggesting to invite P.P              suggest

http://idata.over-blog.com/3/18/86/31/Tale/Disturbing-Lives/Colonialism1.jpg Hey guys,

today we first warmed up with a recap of what you had understood from your test and then we started a new sequence dealing partly with colonialism.

You first had to comment on pictures and you did quite a good job. Then you had to work on the different points of view (POV) used in the documents. Here is what we said:

Settler

Natives

Dominates the world

Forced power from the settler who is considered as sadistic

Proud of himself

They are not free, have to obey

Live in harsh environment and conditions

Views the natives as wild, savage and uncivilized animals with no intelligence

Victims

Scornful to the natives

Feels Superior to the natives

Wants to satisfy his power, his greed for power

Wants to make the natives more civilized

(to) settle

A settler

A settlement

Hey guys,

today you first took a comprehension test about a weird internet service called "rentafriend.com" ... We'll see what you thought about it next time.

Then, during the second part of the lesson, you had to talk about the content and the goals of these two charity ad campaign against famine in Africa. You can watch them again below:

One.org

Oxfam

We'll make a recap about your ideas next time.

   ° Spiderman (Peter's shadow)  -> On the right

- Peter is alone and looks sad while his enemies are in a group and look happy.
- He looks like an intellectual bookworm with his glasses whereas his classmates are more relaxed / casual
Voc:
An old-fashioned look / style

Important adjectives / expressions to know:

Hey guys,

today we first warmed up with the way I was dressed and you had to find the reason why. Here are the different suggestions you made:

  a suit (to dress up

-> date
-> special event ( party / wedding / ... )
-> superhero
-> meeting
-> job interview
-> "professional day"

Then we continued talking about the text. We clarified the role of each character or group of characters and we explained what the problems were:

The roles of the characters:

  • Jean Marie : the boss / the superior / the director / the head
  • Paul :   Advisor / consultant ->
  •                                        - he works on the project
                                                 - he corrects his colleagues' mistakes
                                                       - tries to find a name
                                                       - gives his ideas
                                                       - gives advice
  • His colleagues : the employees  ->
  •                                               - find a name
                                                  -  give their ideas
  • Project : (to) launch British style tearooms
  •

  • Paul's colleagues : their proposals (suggestions)
                    - My tea is rich : -> inspiration : French English lesson book ("My taylor is rich")
                                               -> pb : It doesn't mean anything. It 's not English.
                    - Tea's café : -> inspirations : the French think it's English (place names)
                                          -> pb : It's grammatically incorrect
          Paul's suggestions: ... Teatime / Tea for two

The text and the author play with stereotypes and that's why it's funny.
For example, the French are certain that their proposals for the name of tearooms are perfect while their suggestions are not correct English.
"My tea is rich" comes from old language school books to help students practise pronunciation ("my taylor is rich" is like "where is my umbrella?" or "Brian is in the kitchen"). " Tea's café" is absolutely incorrect grammatically speaking; it doesn't mean anything. It is based on the fact that French people think names of places in English an apostrophe in them.

The French feel superior. They are said to be self-sufficient / smug / haughty and the text plays with it.
As for Paul's suggestions, to his colleagues and boss, they are too flat and don't sound English enough. They are not funny.

Hey guys,

today we dedicated the 1st hour of the lesson to studying this trailer. You can watch it below (along with the 1st part of the show, if you're interested):

Here is what we said about the document:

"to be written by ..."

Then we continued working on stereotypes and our text. Here is the recap we first made about what a cliché is:

"to be written by ..."

And here are the comments we made about the text and where the humour comes from:

"to be written by ..."

http://photo-dict.faqs.org/photofiles/list/6988/9308press_conference.jpgHey guys,

today we first had the presentation of 2 conferences with Shanice and Harmonie, Agathe and Julie. And the winners were... New York! for their more precise and detailed projects to make the city become a greener city.

Here are the ideas of both New York and London:

to be written by Shanice / Harmonie / Julie B. / Agathe

Here are some interview questions asked by the journalists:

to be written by the rest of the class

Then at the end of the lesson, you had to read a document that Holly gave you and you had to match the energy sources according the definitions.

You can download it here:

1--107-.png

HW:

       3- rendre le 1er brouillon pour l'essay suivant: "In 25 years, how should the torch of the Statue of Liberty be powered?"

Hey guys,

today you first took a mime test about the vocabulary "accessoories and weapons". I hope you did good. I will give you your grades asap.

Then we corrected some sentences that you had made to express similarities and differences thanks to the chart we had drawn last time. Here are the sentences that we made:

"to be written by Seda + you can add your personal sentences to test them out and for me to correct them"

Then we continued the lesson with another document: the first panel of the comic strip "Spiderman".

http://ddata.over-blog.com/3/18/86/31/2nde/Super-Heroes/Spiderman_p1.JPG

Your task was to present the document (type, who, where, when, what) and find similarities and/or contrast within the document.

Here are some of the words we wrote on the board:

"to be written by Seda"

HW:

Hey guys,

today, after 2 volunteers talked about their selected pictures and our comments about their presentations, we summed the important ideas to tackle when talking about the war in the US.

We finally watched a short documentary about the war effort. You can watch it again below:

Here are some of today's ideas:

Before the war, women used to wear nylon stockings / tights.
However, they had to give it up because nylon was used to make parachutes; so women used socks instead.

Additional vocabulary:

"to be written by ..."

HW: préparez-vous à un devoir de 2 heures (C.E., trad, E.E. -> Dialogue + Essay) sur le thème de la séquence: "Love and the War".

Hey guys,

today we first watched a document about Freeganism. You can watch again below:

Here is what we said about it:

Warm up : Freeganism

Type of document : report / documentary
  • Who : A man -> a biology teacher at university
  • Where : California , downtown around... / in the vicinity of... the college. In the street / in trash containers.
  • When : We don't know but it's sunny.
  • What : He is taking food from the trash container for free.

Reactions:

----- It's dirty / it's disgusting / there's no way I could do that / you may become sick / you might die because of bacteria.

+++ Free = economical / eco-friendly / the 3 "Re" -> Reuse / Recycle / Reduce consumption

Vegan # Vegetarian

Then we ended the class with understanding the situation in the text very briefly. We answered typical WH- questions about the characters, the setting, and the action.

We didn't have time to write notes about that part but we'll do it next time.

HW: learn your lesson and be ready to talk about the text.
