Hey guys,

today we first watched the very beginning of the first season of "Breaking Bad", an American TV show that Holly advises you to watch.

You can watch the whole episode below and get to know the final answer about who the main character is, where he is, what's just happened and what will happen next... For Thursday, you need to watch the whole video and tell us which one of your hypotheses were correct:

Here are your assumptions:

He is a criminal or a crazy man -

Yes:

- he is carrying a dangerous substance and it's illegal.

- he may have killed someone since he is bearing a gun (however in America, it's not illegal to possess a firearm)

-> he is going to be arrested by the police / he's going to escape to New Mexico (or Mexico) running through the desert

-> he is about to commit suicide since he is crying when he talks to the camera (to his family). He says goodbye at the end and he is holding a gun

-> he is going to fight off the police when they arrive

No:

- he has been kidnapped and he killed his kidnappers. It was self-defense.

- he has just discovered a military secret

- he is a scientist who is carrying out an illegal experiment

-> he is going to tell us the whole story (he is the hero)

-> he has just escaped from a mental / psychiatric hospital

Then you had to work on film genres and fragments from a movie poster.

Here is the spidergram that you came up with:

http://idata.over-blog.com/3/18/86/31/1ere/film-genres/Film_Genres_Mindmap.jpg

HW:

http://www.cartoonstock.com/newscartoons/cartoonists/cga/lowres/cgan462l.jpgHey guys,

today was the last lesson before your test so we made sure the lesson was understood by everyone. We first worked on how to narrate the 2nd page of the comic book and here is what we wrote:

   First, Peter Parker is at a science lab when he listens to a scientist who explains how the radioactive machin works. A spider goes down from the ceiling and Peter is bitten by the radioactive animal. He feels confused / dizzy and weird / his heart rate increases. The scientists make fun of him besause he is a woose / he has a weak stomach. So he leaves the lab.
   When he exits the exhibition, a car almost kills him. He jumps on a wall. He is saved thanks to his new powers.
   Finally, he discovers he is a powerful teenager.

Finally, we continued the class with some revision about phonetics. Here are the basic words you need to know and associate with a symbol:

"to be written by Seda"

HW:

http://surfwithberserk.com/img/weird/weird_people_and_animals/58.jpgHey guys,

today we had a first "special class" about how to consider acting in English. I hope you had fun but that you also learned some interesting things about staging and performing to be a good actor.

Unfortunately some of you had to leave early because of P.E. class. We'll continue this next time, i.e. tomorrow. Our objective is to finish the lesson with a transformation of the text into an act / a scene from a play.

See you tomorrow.

Mr Hattais.

http://www.personal.psu.edu/afr3/blogs/SIOW/laughing%20emoticon.jpgHey guys,

today we first corrected your homework with the different types of humour that there is in your text and here is what you finally wrote from the board:

Types of humour :

  • Bernard's proposition -> "My tea is rich"
              Situational comedy: it doesn't mean anything => there is a misunderstanding. It's a quid pro quo
  • "OK , OK , I think I'm with you" : It's ironic (irony) because he doesn't really understand and yet approves.
  • "Where did they get this crap?" -> situational comedy (ex : you're crap at English -> something incorrect)
  • "It's like ... campsite = camping ... parking = carpark ... "  -> stereotype / broad generalization                                                                                                 -> comparison - It's not English
  • Salvador Dali, a Spanish surrealist painter
                           Stereotype: Paul thinks he's French maybe but he is actually Spanish
                           Grotesque: the fact that S.D arrives and flies in the meeting with a baguette is just impossible. His imagination has gone wild / crazy
  • The fact that the French are proud of their names which are incorrect (which are incorrect) is grotesque. It's also based on the cliché that French people are said to be arrogant (= stereotype)

Finally, we did some theater. One of our objectives will be to turn the text we are studying into a play. Hopefully, we'll be able to finish this next week.

HW:

Hey guys,

after taking a short vocabulary test, we moved on with the lesson; first recapitulating what we had said last time and then continuing with the correction of your homework adding structure to your oral interventions.

Here is what we said:

"to be written by Seda"

Here are the important elements that you need to concentrate on when describing a picture:

"to be written by Seda"

HW:

- apprendre sa leçon

- préparer le test de vendredi

Hey,

today I really got annoyed once more when nobody volunteered to speak about the lesson even if I had given you some time to go over your notes again. Then when I saw that some of you hadn't done their homework (or forgotten it...), it was the last straw on the camel's back; some of you were "granted" an hour of detention next week. I'll make sure your family and everyone at school knows about it...

However, we finally managed to move on with the lesson and particularly with the description of the 1st panel from the 2nd page in your documents.

Here is what we wrote:

"to be written by Mounir"

HW:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YfCkyE7Rpes/TmnjtZax6xI/AAAAAAAAA_U/sEXW_miONIY/s1600/full-english-breakfast.jpgHey guys,

today you got to know Holly, your English assistant who's going to teach you classes every other week (on A week). I hope you liked what we did and to discover what her life is like and her personality.

Next time, we'll have a contest to see if you remember what's been said during the lesson... who will win...? Will you forget or will you show you have a good memory?

Until then, I'll see you tomorrow for the last lesson before your final test on the Stereotype sequence.

HW:

1--14-.png Hey guys,

today even though not every body was present we managed to perform a nice lesson and you are going to be very good actors in the end, I'm sure of that and of your potential!

Here are the important things to remember when in English theater class:

"to be written by ..."

HW: rehearse your play (staging of the text "A Year in the Merde"), finish the adaptation and prepare to perform in front of an audience, i.e. your classmates who were absent today.

Hey guys,

don't forget to turn in your super hero poster or I will really get PISSED OFF and you don't want to see that.

In the first part of the lesson, we corrected your homework both about description and narration. Here is what we finally wrote in your copybooks:

First panel -> Describe = PRESENT BE + V-ing

Method :
- type of doc + parts : panel /from comic strip / 3 parts : P.P / uncle / bubbles -- it can be divided into 3 parts
- who : two characters ( P.P and Uncle ) -- it features...
- Where : bedroom -- it takes place...
- when : in the morning ...
- what : wake up / smile / laugh / stroke his hair
- how : tender / loving / caring / kind -- they love each other
- why : time to go to school

First page -> Narrate = PRESENT SIMPLE
* First, Peter Parker wakes up thanks to his uncle .
* Then, he has breakfast with his aunt and uncle in the living room. He leaves home and goes to school where he carries out experiments. His teachers congratulate him because he's a good student.
* In the afternoon, he meets Sally and tries to invite her for a date.
* But she refuses when flash arrives and he makes fun of him .
* Finally, he ends up alone and decides to go to a science exhibition.

HW:

Hey guys,

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WXbJfJ-veLI/TGYUy6OOSbI/AAAAAAAAEMs/Jdn30OYz0G0/s1600/angry_man.png

today you REALLY PISSED ME OFF not saying a word and as a consequence you got more homework to do than expected... I'm warning you one last time: I'm not talking and working for you. So get moving!

Eventually, we managed to analyse the first picture of the page and narrate the story in the first page.

Here is what we finally wrote:

"to be written by Mounir"

HW:

Hey guys,

today we first watched a silly British show as a warm up and you had to understand the situation and why it was funny, then try to find what could define British humour.

You can watch the document below:

Here is what we said about it:

Warm up : British humour
  • type of doc : it's a short humourous show from the BBC .
  • who : It features two men: A man who is selling fruit and another one who is coming to have his fruit "repaired"
  • where : in the UK , at the grocery / the grocer's
  • what : British humour :
  •                                   - puns on words : apple / blackberry -> cell phone brands
                                                                       orange -> cell phone operator
                                                                       X BOX 360 ( egg's box £ 3.60 ) -> video console
                                            - slapstick comedy : when the man throws the orange away with this foot and breaks a window
                                            - situational comedy : the situation is highly improbable and even ...
                                            - ... grotesque : when he checks that the blackberry is frozen, it's exaggerate.

==> British humour is often based on puns on words which lead to a grotesque situation

Finally, we talked about the text and we tried to see what types of humour you could find in the text and explain it.

Types of humour in the text "In France this is considered very English":

- Bernard's accent -> exaggeration

 - Repetition of monosyllables

- Grotesque situation

HW:

Hey guys,

http://www.samsakamo.com/img/argument.jpg

today we worked on how to improve your essays and above all, how to organize your ideas in a coherent way and really answer the question.

"Do you think that some internet services or websites should be banned / outlawed / forbidden?" (200 words)

Here is the introduction we made:

INTRO:

          Present the topic: The internet is a useful tool and many people use it. You can access many sites with a lot of information.

          Present the question:  However in some countries where there are dictatorships some internet websites are banned. During the "Arab Spring" many sites were shut down because of the fear of free speech and rebellion.

              What are the dangers and is it a good thing to outlaw some websites?

          Present the organisation: First we will see why some websites should be restricted and then why some services should be completely forbidden.

DVPT: ...

CCL: ...

VOCABULARY :

                          (to) affect children's mental health

                          (to) restrict access for underage children

                          a dictator -> a dictatorship

                          (to) control what people do/think and how they behave

                          (to) tell about the reality of their lives

                          (to) protest against the political regime

                          a tool = un outil

HW:

http://drsvenkatesan.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/heart_beating.gifHey guys,

today we first worked on how to create an atmosphere starting just from your senses and impressions and our little experiments... ;)  Creepy, wasn't it?

Here is what we finally said:

Narrating starting from your sensations and feelings

The desert island:

Arriving/landing: by boat, by airplane.

I came to the desert island by plane but it crashed into the ocean. I felt cold and wet.

Reaching the beach: I managed to reach the beach walking in the sand. It felt like biscuits under my feet.

Getting into the forest: I felt lost and exhausted. I was injured/hurt/wounded. My eyes hurt. I felt as if I were blind, but I knew I was in the forest. It felt dry and like twigs under my feet.

In the forest, first meeting with the natives: I was taken by people to their camp. They fed me soup with mysterious ingredients. It felt as if I were eating human eye balls and a warm beating heart.

tree-voc.JPG

Structure: Exprimer une émotion/sensation

The 5 senses:
Touch -> to feel
Smell
-> to smell
Taste
-> to taste
Hearing
-> to sound
Sight
-> to look … + adj
                               + like + nom
                               + as if + phrase (prétérit modal)

Ex: It feels strange and mysterious
       It smells like vinegar
       It tastes as if it were dead fish

Then, after revealing the real objects from the bag, we continued the lesson with a recap of your homework about Joseph Conrad and we began to study an extract from one of his biggest success: "Heart of Darkness".

Here is what we have begun to say about it:

Heart of Darkness:

Type of narrative: 1st person narrative. The point of view is Marlow’s. It’s an internal focalization.

Who: Marlow and his men (pilgrims) + the natives.
Where: On a river, into the forest, in the wild/wilderness (a wild dense jungle)
When: At night

What: Marlow is looking for a friend (Kurtz) who may be lost/ may have been kidnapped. As he sails up the river, he feels as if someone were watching and following him. In this imagination, it sounds as if the natives were preparing a ceremony/sacrifice. Because of the heavy foliage and the dark, he feels as if he were blind.
    Cf. : « bodies swaying »      Sense of sight
            « eyes rolling »            Sense of sight
            « feet stomping »        Sense of hearing

Additonal vocabulary:

A steamer
A steam-ship
A roof
(to) sail = to go by boat
(to) manage to = (to) succeed in ...

HW:

Documents:

- Téléchargez le texte ici.

- Téléchargez la fiche de compréhension ici.
