Consumers- Targeting children and teenagers

Yes children are purchase influencers. They nag their parents to get  what they want and they get what they want. So, targeting them is juicy for firms.

ARTICLE: Palm unveils a Smartphone for younger users, The New York Times, sept 9th, 2009

REVISION OF HOW TO MAKE AN  ACCOUNT OF A PRESS ARTICLE
  1. Introduction : type of document, source, date, general topic.
  2. Ideas-Facts- reactions, consequences etc...
  3. Conclusion : of the article and personal conclusion
  4. Branching out
HOMEWORK FOR NEXT CLASS : Account in English of the article. Branching out: Do you think you are a good target for firms? Why? Why not?

And for you :

I wrote the words : teenagers and firms- teenagers as consumers
And you came up with interesting words and ideas : target, to target, to influence, to make someone loyal, to do odd jobs...
"Brands target teenagers because teenagers love new trends, like being fashionable, want to belong to a group, don't care about the price of the things they buy because they don't work and don't earn their living(gagner sa vie).
because when they become adults they will continue to buy the same brands, so it's a way for them to make them loyal...

Then we started working on the text page 54 : Credit card firm targets teens
And I told you the story of Shopping Barbie.
What does Barbie shop with? What are her means of payment (moyens de paiement) ?
A mastercard!!! Thanks to Mattel and Mastercard's partnership.
So when the little girls who are used to playing with these mini credit cards grow older, they will no doubt want a mastercard..... Simple isn'it?

For next time : looking for words and looking for specific vocabulary page 54 and all the ideas contained in the article.

Today the answer to the question I asked last time was: Yes, You had a test! A vocabulary test. I have corrected your  tests and ...suspens... results : next time!

Then we did a short brainstorming. Brainstorming= tempête dans le  cerveau ou quand les neurones s'agitent pour produire des mots en relation avec un thème. Et aujourd'hui le thème était : SCHOOL

Congratulations! You came up with many words: classroom, homework, teachers, sudents, pupils, listening, learning, children, teenagers, pencil-cases, books, copy-books, lessons, subjects, marks, grades...

And one student said : boredom. When I asked you who was bored in class, some raised their hands. So, my mission is to help you HAVE FUN WHILE LEARNING!

Watch this for a start:
Words you need to understand the video better:
I'm done with high school= j'ai fini le lycée
It looks like a prison= il ressemble à une prison
Chemistry= chimie
Library= bibliothèque, ici le CDI
the lecture room= la salle de conférence
Colombus= Christophe Colomb (qui découvrit l'Amérique)
What sucks...= ce qui craint...
To save money for College = faire des économies pour l'Université. College = l'équivalent de l'université, 2 ans après le "bac" aux USA

AND DON'T FORGET TO LEARN  YOUR LESSON!

Today we met again and I was happy to see you back.
You told us about your vacationsl. Some went to England, one person to the USA, another to Pau, and some sayed here.
Then we mentionned Michael Jackson's death and burial.
We said that:
He was the King of pop, a good dancer, a big man because he did many things for charities. We added that he was an icon and a model for people. We ended on a sad note since we said he had been assassinated. He was injected a lethal dose of medicine. He was buried on September 3rd two months after his death.

FOR YOU:

Today we met for the first time.
I am happy to be your teacher and am sure we will do  nice work together.
I explained to you how important each of you is for this class and  how much I count on you to make it happen. I hope you accept this responsibility by sharing, studying and making progress.

Then off we went!
  • English classroom : how to ask for help. Prefer: I don't have a clue to I don't understand

And many more...
Please have a look at your books...
  • Michael Jackson, the man and his  burial.
We used a few expressions such as :

- He started his careers with ... = il a commencé sa carrière avec...
- He died of a OD = an overdose of medicine
- He was killed =il a été tué
- He was buried on September 3rd = il a été enterré le 3 septembre
- in a gold-plated casket= dans un cercueil plaqué or.

All we did is to be learnt for tomorrow.

Question : Will you have a written test or not ?
One more thing : Sabrina, it is your turn to write the date on the board tomorrow.
See you tomorrow!
